Globe’s Visibility… MY Visibility

My Visibility continues to serve me well…

It’s been more than two years now since I’ve taken advantage of this “high speed” service… who would not be attracted to an unlimited wireless data with speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps and may sometimes peak at 1.8 Mbps? The remarkable potential of being truly mobile was at the works and the ever experimental me wanted to take advantage of this.

I had to do some pencil pushing to justify the costs… Php 2,000/month with a free Huawei E220 USB modem… I mean, the device itself would pay off for half of my lock-in subscription of 24 months… factor in the benefits I would get of accessing email and the internet not only in the confines of my home but everywhere I go… there was no way anyone would stop me from getting that subscription.

Being a pioneer subscriber of most mobile telco services since 1993, I could attest that Globe’s Visibility had left their competitors behind. Sure there were others who were first but Globe’s Visibility had the most number of HSDPA sites to be accessed and this meant faster speeds in more areas… faster speeds meant more data when I needed them… more data to make quick decisions at the time when most needed.

The past 2 years saw the emergence of internet based applications for business and pleasure. The tweaking of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) had never ceased to amaze me and one just needed a reliable data line connection. Instant Messengers have been transformed from simple chatting to virtual presence where one can send files, pictures, music or just anything at the push of a button. Online conferences and even online gaming may not be new but what made it more exciting is being able to enjoy its benefits outside our homes and/or offices and make anyplace an extension of these places. Truly, to stress the importance of data lines and more so, WIRELESS data lines, is an understatement. Enter Globe Visibility and the world around us changes.

As with any other service, Visibility has had its problems. HSDPA coverage throughout the country could still be improved. Though it still has the most number of HSDPA capable sites, competitors are starting to realize that they would have to jump the gun on Globe anytime now. Smart had recently started to offer a “nationwide” unlimited wireless broadband service for Php 1,500 claiming that a lot of their sites are now HSDPA capable. Sun likewise is offering unlimited HSDPA service for Php 1,999 and an unlimited but lower UMTS speed for Php 999 though good for Metro Manila only. I have noticed a slight increase of dropped connections due to the drastic changes of HSDPA signals from a bar in the strength signal in one minute then surging to a full scale in another. Perhaps Globe is tweaking their sites for the better? That, I would like to think so.

For me, the benefits far outweigh the headaches so I’ve decided to have myself tied up for another 2 years. The convenience it brings to me gives me more quality time in living my life to its fullest. Would I recommend it? You don’t even have to think twice.

Let’s move on…

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this blog as the task of moving a family from our humble condo (with a nice view) to a more spacious house (Related post : http://dlreyes.blogspot.com/2007/02/its-been-while.html) was not an easy task. After so many revisions and a lot of arguments with our contractor regarding the implantation of designs, the anxiety (and money) was worth it.

In November 8, 2007, we settled in our new place… a place with a prepaid landline and an internet service relying on a wireless service called Globe Visibility.

Ninong! (Godfather)

I would stand again as Ninong (Godfather) to the marriage of another Pinoybadminton couple this Saturday, May 5, 2007 (The first being Condrad Vidad and Aina Iledan... see my post of September 11, 2006).

The formal bonding of Tom Enriquez (Pecto) to Mitch Tanchoco (Porky) through the Holy Matrimony to be held at the Claret Church is a much awaited affair as the two have been steadies for quite some time now.

I met the couple about 2 years ago through badminton when they started joining our playing group in Centro Atletico. They have become active members of the forum both in Kelvin's and that of Pinoybadminton Inc. (www.pinoybadminton.com.ph).

In the case of Tom, he helped me post the Monday Centro Atletico games in Kelvin's forum when Kelvin unceremonously banned me from his forum when it became obvious that I was exposing his misdeeds, misrepresentations and the deception he was doing to the members of his forum.

Tom for some time also handled the Tuesday, Thursday group playing in Battledore when Kelvin threatened the Vargas couple, owners of Battledore, of withdrawal of PB from the playing venue from the simple reason that Kelvin's unreasonable demand could not be accomodated.

As with Conrad and Aina, I will be standing in as principal sponsor to Tom and Mitch not because of my age or social stature as Tom and Mitch are just a few years younger than me, but because of my zeal to keep the marital flame alive and the fervor to build strong foundations in strengthening the family. I am very honored of this responsibility to be a true guardian of this life-long commitment they are making.

Congratulations Tom and my very best of wishes to Mitch.

Pinoybadminton Inc. in Badminton Extreme TV Show

Pinoybadminton was invited by the producers of Badminton Extreme for an episode shoot of their TV show aired at Studio 23 every Saturdays at 1pm.

To be aired on March 31, Kennie Asuncion gives tips and corrects our mistakes as she sees us doing actual play. She then answers our questions on strategy and proper positioning which many will find quite informative if aired without any cuts.

Remember the date, March 31, 2007 (Saturday) 1pm at Studio 23.

It's been a while...

More than a month without a post... I feel guilty...

The renovation of our place is taking place and keeping us very busy tending and spending from morning till night. I had a pre-paid phone line installed there temporarily but still no stable internet access. I rely mostly on my Globe Visibility account (wireless) but I could not get HSDPA (wireless broadband) signals from that place and I am forced to be patient on GPRS (it's like a wireless data but only with dial-up speed).

We have started knocking down walls and partitions so our new home would be airy, spacey and welcomey. Aside from repairing the old roof, we are having another layer of roof installed on top of the old one with a gap to dissipate heat. 2 of the 5 bathrooms have to be retiled and 3 of the 5 bedrooms' floorings have to be changed. We are proud of our newly landscaped frontage as we were able to retain the year round fruiting Maracas tree which is rarely seen in the Philippines. The young blue grass is adapting vey well and the blue vine has started to flower. The African daisies are alive and a lot of those purple petalled and purple leafed plants which Lorna (who else?) tendered have started to bloom against the shimmering sun.

We envision it to be open to all, a social place, a place to meet, a place to rest. 6oo square meters of floor area is too big for us, but not big enough to acccomodate a badminton court.

Just yesterday, the association president called to inform me that I was elected new director of the subdivision we were moving in to. Funny that this happened as I declined another term as association chairman of our present place.

Somebody who looked like Kelvin Montalbo

Happy New Year and what a way to start it all…

After the endless eating sprees during the holidays, we decided on a very simple celebration of my wife Lorna’s birthday yesterday by attending the 6pm Mass at the Megamall Chapel and a light dinner at the nearby Dulcinea outlet. After giving our orders, I momentarily left Lorna and my daughter Sophie to check out the department store for the availability of the much requested “Crocs” inspired and “value for money” Planet Shoes (http://pinoybadminton.com.ph/forums/index.php?showtopic=611&pid=9485&st=0&#entry9485 and http://www.bncxe.org/showthread.php?t=18787).

While looking around, I received a call from my wife who told me that somebody who looked like Kelvin Montalbo, moved like Kelvin Montalbo, acted like Kelvin Montalbo was seated a few tables across her… “this I have to see”, I told myself as I rushed back to the restaurant.

True enough as I entered and observed, there was this man seated with a male and 2 females who looked like Kelvin Montalbo, moved like Kelvin Montalbo, acted like Kelvin Montalbo who I thought was purposely trying to seek cover by using his female companion as a shield.

Thoughts of Kelvin Montalbo banning my wife and myself from his forum despite our willingness to help him get out of his ruined reputation in badminton flashed into my mind. Frankly, we felt insulted by his actions and still could not understand why he did those things. We had provided him venues to communicate his desires but he would constantly evade issues perhaps to hide what he had done in the past. Those who would talk against him were silenced purposely and he would seek sympathy from those who would not know of the real situation.

Of those who are now active in his forum, how many really know Kelvin Montalbo? How many have actually met him? How many were in Pinoybadminton from the very start? How many really know what happened to Pinoybadminton?

Despite all these, we had the intention of greeting him for the new year but before we knew it, the person who looked like Kelvin Montalbo, moved like Kelvin Montalbo, acted like Kelvin Montalbo left with his group and evaded our looks… just like Kelvin Montalbo…

Another Plugging...

My family and I will be the guests in Father Bel San Luis' radio program "Salitang Buhay" on Sunday (Holy Family Sunday), December 31, 2006, 9pm over at DZMM, 630khz on the AM Band.

It is not the first time that I've guested in this radio program as I have been a resource speaker when it comes to family matters not only here but also in Radio Veritas in the past. So aside from badminton, a little bit of myself is being revealed little by little...

Of Reunions and Memories

Our SAB Badminton Group had it’s 5th Annual Christmas gathering last week at the Cajun Restaurant in Metrowalk, Pasig. SAB is short for Salvador “Badong” A. Banquiles, a respected badminton personality, former member of the Philippine Team and for some time Philippine Head coach.

Somehow 5 years ago, we started to know each other as training mates made up of couples under the auspices of Badong Banquiles and it might have been providential that our lives as couples have criss-crossed each other’s paths not only in badminton but in the real game called life.

Throughout the 5 years of being together, we have seen TJ and Marni Mata tie the knot and build their family. Both lawyers, TJ eventually put up his own law firm. Rene and Carla Manas finally had a child after a long wait. We have witnessed how Noel Bonoan became the Undersecretary of Finance and becoming the Philippines’ number 1 graft buster at such a young age and his wife Ina ever supporting his endeavors. Lawyer Erwin Gavino after the first Christmas gathering was finally able to bring his wife Lindy who for a time we suspected was just a figment of his imagination. Lindy (who turned out be a lawyer as well) has since joined us in the reunions which followed.

I could not forget the Sheila Cruz revealing to us that she had breast cancer three Christmases ago and we have seen her husband Don’s worrisome look despite his trying to hide it. The good news is that Sheila is under remission and after her series of treatments, Don and Sheila have become very active in playing badminton not only in Pinoybadminton but also with their support group called “I Can Serve”.

Lanny and his lawyer wife Eileen just arrived from Myanmar in time to join us for the gathering. They have been our college friends since the AIESEC days where we served the organization as officers.

We knew that Badong took up courses this year for his promotion in the Philippine National Police, a job he has kept aside from his life centered in the development of badminton. Incidentally, Badong’s protégé through Centro Atletico, 12 year old Gelita Castilo together with her partner Poca Alcala won the gold in the Girls’ 13 and under Cheers Singapore Youth International Badminton Championships just a few weeks ago. Badong’s wife Jeanette who is also a former member of the Philippine Team, continues to be busy with her job in Johnson and Johnson.

These relationships we have continued to nurture and our lives have since blossomed into something we consider as meaningful. Funny that these all started in badminton 5 years ago yet somehow we realize that if only we reflect on that Nativity scene which started more than 2,000 years ago, then the meaning of life would be truly appreciated.

A Salute to the Battledore Group

Many trace the humble beginnings of Pinoybadminton to the people who were playing at the Battledore & Shuttlecock Badminton Hall in Quezon City. The court which was newly opened in October 2003 was just about the same time people were going into the fad of playing badminton. The converted warehouse was a former printing area which became a converging point of badminton enthusiasts mainly because of the value for money it offered to the players.

Unlike other courts which opened during that time, there were no Membership Dues nor Guest Fees to worry about… what mattered more was honest to goodness credibility in keeping one’s word in honoring reservations and payments at rates comparable to courts with membership fees.

For almost 3 years, forum members of Pinoybadminton were doing just that until the “Kelvin incident” which drew the ire of Battledore owners Jojo and Joy Vargas (check post of May 4 and May 8 http://dlreyes.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_dlreyes_archive.html ).

Not to be daunted, the PB group which was left under the care of PeeWee Elijir, Tom Enriquez (Pecto) and Michelle (cutekoosh) continued to play even without Kelvin as they knew they had a commitment to honor not only to Battledore but also to the person who was in charge of the group but was out of the country when the incident happened.

He may have reasons many do not understand but upon coming back, the person in charge seemed to have lost enthusiasm in Battledore and instead put up a group nearer to his place of residence, a move which could have been more understandable if the timing was right.

At one time the Battledore group was the biggest PB playing group that during the Inter-Barangay Tournament of PB, they had to be divided into 2 teams and both teams came out the top 2 teams in the tournament!

For close to 7 months after the “Kelvin Incident” and just relying on SMS (Short Message Service) to communicate with each other to muster the numbers, the group had decided to discontinue their games starting December, 2006.

Battledore owners Jojo and Joy Vargas know the real reason behind the move but unlike the “Kelvin Incident” which left an ugly scar on reputations, the remnants of the former PB group who tried to continue the legacy of the Battledore Games for more than 3 years parted ways with the Vargas couple with everyone having a clear understanding of the situations involved.

The captain and the officers have long abandoned ship yet the faithful sailors chose to save whatever was left…

Clearly, there was respect towards those who were left behind because they honored commitments until the very end.

My apologies…

It’s been quite a while since I updated this site as I have been very busy lately. So many things have been happening and I’ve been feeling the toll just recently.

I had to finish a recording (yes, a music recording) for an album my wife and her friend, noted music therapist, Marisa V. Marin (http://www.philippinepsychology.net/pjp/vol37-2.html)would be launching very soon. The CD should be out before Christmas though the official launching is scheduled for Valentine. “Isang Sulyap” (A Side-Glance or a glimpse from the corner of one’s eyes) is the title of the album as well as the banner song which inspired Marisa to compile her other materials based on her experiences with people close to her. “Isang Sulyap” was the song she composed for our wedding 11 years ago of which my wife Lorna and I sang during that special occasion. More on “Isang Sulyap” as soon as it comes out.

From our humble unit overlooking the Marikina Valley as well as the concrete structures of the Ortigas Business District and the mountains of Antipolo came a chance to buy-out the shares of a house occupied by my wife’s family in an exclusive subdivision. There is a total renovation that has to be done there in order to make it within our acceptable comfort level. We’ve been meeting with contractors, architects, interior designers, an electrical engineer, landscaper and just about anybody who could suggest the least expensive way to maximize what is available with the existing structure.

The Christmas season is about to enter and my mind is still out of it. Avant Garde Composer Ariel Arambulo (one of the Arambulos of the Greenhills Music Studio) had requested our family to be part of an acapela choir sometime this December and I haven’t learned the song yet (is this a new career I'm entering into?) ! My mind is in a daze and my lower left eyelid had been twitching involuntarily for the past two weeks!

The Pinoybadminton Saga will continue soon and I assure everyone that the basic contents have been finished a lot earlier. What I’ve failed to do though is to refine the side stories which could make it more interesting.

(Continued… Meeting of February 17 postponed to February 22)

The election of Ron de la Paz as president of the soon to be formed Pinoybadminton, Inc. took him by surprise. There was no doubt that he was very well qualified and respected among his peers. He was nicknamed “El Kapitan” by the East Smashers because of his ability to solidify the group despite a diverse collection of characters.

It was however short-lived as his heart and mind were willing but the realization that he was undergoing a big transition in his life outside of Pinoybadminton suddenly dawned on him. Ron’s time would be occupied with his plans of moving his family to another place and his transition from one job to another… thus, the core group fully understood his reasons in declining the position and making it temporarily vacant.

Due to a lack of quorum via text confirmation, the February 17 meeting was postponed to February 22, Starbucks Podium, 9pm with the following Agenda:

1. Vacancy in the Presidency
2. Signing of SEC papers
3. Marketing STRATPLAN
4. Other Matters

11 of the 13 Incorporators and a number of those who would be regular members attended the meeting as we filled the whole second floor of the venue. There was a toss-up between lawyer Butch Lerio and Advertising Specialist and Badminton equipment reviewer Chewy Chua. Both were assets to the company we were forming but perhaps Chewy had the edge to make the organization more balanced as the rest of the officers were all lawyers anyway. By secret balloting, Chewy Chua was elected President of the soon to be formed Pinoybadminton, Inc.

In that fruitful meeting, the Incorporation papers and the By-Laws were signed. A group was formed to study further our market positioning and strategy based on what was discussed to be presented to the body in a meeting to be called for the specific purpose.

All we can do now is wait for the completion of the papers required by law and we all agreed that the next general meeting would be after the approval of our papers by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

We were sworn to secrecy about our moves but our action was towards the build up of curiosity and excitement of what was about to transpire.

In Kelvin’s Pinoybadminton.com, many of our developmental discussions were being tackled in the PB Panel forum which was open only to the “officers” and VIP members like myself. Ordinary members of the forum did not have access and most were not even aware of its existence. It is quite understandable that a great number of forumers at that time did not know of the issues involved in the crafting of Pinoybadminton.

In that particular fora (which we were able to save for future reference) was evidence of certain agreements, policies, minutes of meetings, directions the group would be taking and accountabilities of certain members among other things.

The content of the PB Panel Forum was enough proof that Kelvin was violating what was agreed upon plus factoring the questionable way Kelvin was representing Pinoybadminton inside and outside of the forums, how would one feel if HE DELETED the whole fora to erase his tracks?

In one push of a button, Kelvin DELETES YEARS OF PRODUCTIVE WORK AND SERIOUS DISCUSSIONS just because he could not address the problems which we consider as normal in any organization! There were avenues to talk things over and at many instances he would make lame excuses not to attend (We kept his responses via SMS for proof).

To make matters worse, he opens a “Donation Thread” asking money for the so called maintenance of the site which for such a long time was already being addressed by the group. There was definitely no transparency in his end and many of us had a very strong suspicion that he was already fooling many of the members aside from those he victimized outside.

After deleting the PB Panel discusssions, we had no recourse but to bring everything in the open as everyone had the right to know. But since Kelvin was administrator of the forum, he had the power to BAN the very members who were concerned on the development of PB.

News was spreading so fast about our being banned. We received sympathies and support not only from members of the forum but as well as other groups involved in badminton. There was a sudden rush of demand for information as to what was happening.

One of the first references which opened the door to give a clue of what happened was the Flicker site of Chewy Chua, particularly, http://www.flickr.com/photos/chewychua/94004857/in/dateposted/ . People saw the other side of Kelvin which was not known to those who recently signed up.

On February 13, 2006, I received a text message informing me to visit a “Pinoybadminton Blog Site” located at http://pinoybadminton.blogspot.com/. I was surprised to see a picture of Kelvin and quotations from the very site where we were banned. There were some comments but mostly from anonymous posters and I felt that it’s positioning catered more to violent reactions. I honestly do not know up to this moment as to who put up that site but it inspired me to put up my own where I could present issues on Pinoybadminton in a factual manner coming from a person who had breathed in lived Pinoybadminton from its humble beginnings.

The project that I undertook was also a learning process for me as it was the first time I was putting up something concrete over the net. Though I’ve been surfing the internet since its inception, the rudiments of putting up a website and a blog were something new to me.

What I wanted was very simple, clean with the prime objective of getting the message across. It was also one way of responding to criticisms being hurled at us in the very site where we were banned.

It cannot be denied that there are people who follow blogs on a regular basis for whatever it is worth. I am surprised by the readership of this particular blog of mine considering that the topics here are limited to Pinoybadminton.

Nevertheless, the creation of www.Pinoybadminton.com.ph paved the way to more robust discussions centering on issues related to Philippine badminton that in only a few months time, the new site had surpassed the number of daily online users compared to Kelvin’s site considering that he claims to have more than 6,200 registered users.

We were tasked to get in touch with the people we had in mind to join the eventual incorporation of Pinoybadminton to attend this meeting in Chewy’s place. We felt like we were revolutionaries out to spread a secret message among those people we trusted.

Much to our delight, all who were invited except one arrived (she would later on attend a future meeting and sign the Articles of Incorporation).

After a round of drinks and snacks, there was a presentation by the core group as to the objective of the formalization of the group. All were in agreement of the incorporation and the next steps would actually be the documentation and filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

For purposes of organization, we had to elect the officers of the corporation we were forming. Chewy and I were being nominated to lead the group but somehow we had to decline as we were the most controversial figures in the “breakaway” group. Besides, we could help and steer the group even without the title. The group nevertheless understood our reasons and the following were elected:

Treasurer-----------------Erwin Gavino (rocket)

Call it coincidence or fate but 3 of the 4 corporate officers are lawyers who in their own right have made a name in their respective fields. The only non-lawyer (Ron) is a proven leader respected by all because of his impartiality in issues concerning Pinoybadminton.

A meeting was once again set for February 17 for the signing of the papers and the submission of necessary documents (TIN, CTC, etc.) but due to the absence of a quorum was later on reset to February 22.

Between this meeting and February 22, the newly elected President had to back out for some justifiable reason which would be explained in a later post.

I guess the people who do not really know the issues with Pinoybadminton and those who have joined Kelvin’s forum just recently, many who have not even met nor dealt with Kelvin, would find the owner of this blog (me) as “pala-away”.

Just what I mentioned in my past posts, the “officers” of Kelvin’s PB, except for 3 who have remained inactive, have formed Pinoybadminton, Inc in response to Kelvin’s inaction and refusal to make amends to the grave embarrassment he had given to Pinoybadminton as an institution.

We are not afraid to face anyone and in fact have incorporated under the laws of the Republic of the Philippines so we could be responsible for whatever actions we make and will be making for the good of the many.

What did it take to form Pinoybadminton, Inc.? Commitment, organization, money and a firm and selfless advocacy to promote and sustain the interest in Philippine badminton.

We are here to help and not to quarrel. We have real identities and do not hide in the shadows of the internet. We stand by, support and fight for what we think is right.

Our challenge to the likes of inantheotoko and the others who see me as “pala-away”… Meet me in person or I can meet you at the given place and time so we can explain what we stand for and what we do. You may also want to check www.pinoybadminton.com.ph to give you an idea what we're all about but mind you, the forum is just a small part of Pinoybadminton, Inc.

Perhaps, you can also do some research beforehand and check if our claims are true and if the events mentioned in this blog really happened… perhaps too, you may want to ask about us and our credentials from those who have been in Pinoybadminton for more than 3 years already.

Moving on…

I was shocked by the news of Rommel’s (PB handle – bigayhilig) demise last August 31 due to complications arising from stroke. At such a young age of 36 or so, one can’t really tell what may happen and things like these only remind us that we must do good all the time so we can be prepared to face our Creator with a clean conscience anytime.

Conrad Vidad (PB handle – Veed) is getting married to Aina Iledan at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Tagaytay City on September 15, 2006.

The two met because of badminton and according to their storybook style of invitation with a fairy tale concept, “Prince Conrad and Princess Karmina’s rendezvous became more often owing the countless things they had in common and their shared penchant for athletics. They enjoyed each other’s company until…”

My wife and I will be standing in as principal sponsors not because of our age or social stature as Conrad and Aina are just a few years younger than us and have thriving careers, but because of our zeal to keep the marital flame alive and the fervor to build strong foundations in strengthening the family. We are very honored of this responsibility to be true guardians of this life-long commitment they are making.

Congratulations to the Wednesday group of Kelvin’s forum for having a new home at Smashroom along Oranbo Drive, Pasig City.

When it was conclusive that the group would not go back to West Drive because of the reversion to regular rates (see previous post), I was telling Armand Almario (the general manager of Smashroom and trusted person of Mau Lim, the owner) that the group would in all probability consider Smashroom as their next alternative because of its proximity to their ideal location of play.

This chat of ours about 2 weeks ago happened when we were monitoring the developments between the group and West Drive Courts as I felt partly responsible for introducing Pinoybadminton to the owners of West Drive so many years back. We were members of West Drive when they first opened and likewise mediated between Dez, Kelvin and the owners Junnie and Alvin when a problem arose because of a simple misunderstanding on February, 2004. It is also in this light that we had to warn Armand that if ever this group would play in Smashroom, let it be known that they are not in any way connected to us as we made it clear to follow certain guidelines when representing Pinoybadminton in places we play.

Our relationship with Smashroom started when they opened last year as we took advantage of their very reasonable membership rates. The court is very near our place where I serve as Chairman of a Homeowners Association composed of 75 Households. We have collaborated with the Barangay (with Barangay Captain Richard Pua) on several projects in the past for the improvement of security and order in the place. The owner Mau Lim is also an acquaintance of my wife.

Armand is very much aware of the problems of the group and I believe is pretty much prepared to handle the situation in case something happens.

In the meantime, I do hope that they have learned their lessons from the past as a door once again is opened.

Ironically but sincerely I say… Welcome to our Barangay (Barangay Oranbo)… Make the most of your stay... but please… behave accordingly.

The State of the EB Address

(EB - short for Eyeball... as in seeing eyeball to eyeball... in this case pertaining to meeting and playing with real people as opposed to being in virtual existence as in the forums)

The original Pinoybadminton groups playing at the East, Olympic and Centro have all migrated to www.pinoybadminton.com.ph.

The Battledore group has been holding playing days regularly for the past 2 months without posting in Kelvin’s forum as a result of Kelvin’s argument with the Battledore owners and his false threat of withdrawing "his players" from Battledore. Well Kelvin withdrew alright but not the players. Total effect? It was Kelvin who was withdrawn.

Where is the Wednesday group now? Originally from Metro, they transferred to Galaxy Badminton (was it a parking demand by Kelvin which made them get out of Galaxy?) and until recently have been playing in West Drive Badminton Courts. Despite special accommodations and a special price accorded, the group would cancel reservations at the last hour or in some instances, not advise the cancellation at all.

I believe the owners have withdrawn the special price given to the group as a result of this and have resorted to charging them the regular rates. I really can’t blame them for doing so but again, this is goodwill gone down the drain.

If there is anything in Kelvin that I like, it is his pattern of consistency and predictability in dealing with the court owners. Mind you that this is not the first time it happened. Who could remember his reserving 5 to 6 courts on several Saturdays in Centro Atletico and canceling the reservations without even informing the court? No apologies, no offer to pay a compromise, no nothing. Didn’t this happen also in several other courts?

Nevertheless, I do hope the Wednesday group finds a home and learn through experience the value of goodwill, proper ethics and the right way to enjoy the game. No matter where the EB address would be at, nothing beats the state of a good reputation.

OT na to.. just answering some questions.

That was a very good question by MRAS… why do we need to blackmail Kelvin? Do we need his forum when Pinoybadminton, Inc. has it’s own? I would think that this is shallow reasoning at its best.

Now he accuses us of wanting to be popular when in reality, countless projects of PB were silently supported by us as we made sure that he would get the limelight and recognition. One may ask Inquirer Badminton c/o Ching dela Cruz, Coach Gerry McGuire of England, Mizuno’s President Lovell Gopez and right hand man Rod Canindo and several merchants and court owners about this.

We want power? Power for what? He constantly accuses me of power grabbing but what power are we talking about? Power to control the forums? What’s in it for us? Historically, we spend more… historically, he earns more…

Granting that he created the forum to ask what he does not understand, to share his ideas and thoughts about the game, to learn from his experiences and the most important of all, to have FUN, the mere fact that Pinoybadminton dealt with people, organizations and money proved that it had gone BEYOND the forum… it became a pseudo entity with certain ethical norms expected to be followed which Kelvin himself had consistently violated. Kelvin himself concurred to the objectives stated for the group as evidenced in the first portion of this blog. (Aside from the first portion of this blog, check Kelvin’s post on Jan. 13, 2004 under the thread where dlreyes was the PB Featured Member… hurry, before he deletes it! http://forum.pinoybadminton.com/index.php?showtopic=308).

Rich kids? Now what kind of squid tactic is he using now? But I do hope we’re rich and I do hope I could go back to being a kid. I wonder who said this statement two years ago when he was selling the Smash Philippines domain, “I am just a businessman with lots of money”. (Kelvin's quotable qoute had forever lingered in the minds of Smash directors till this very moment especially Bob N. Betts, Director for Total Internet and Technical Innovations Head)

We all want fun that is why we are doing this.

Can we have fun knowing that the court owners feel bad and disappointed that court reservations are cancelled without prior notice specially on peak hours?

Can we have fun knowing that the group's reputation is being tainted because of someone's doing?

Can we have fun knowing that somebody is fooling someone?

Can we have fun without any long term direction?

Can we have fun knowing that our Private Messages are being printed and being shown to others?

Can we have fun not knowing where our donations are going?

The answer is Maybe... and that is if one is not aware of the circumstances behind the scene or does not care to do anything at all.

ask, share, learn and have fun… Funny that this was part of the logo which was registered under Pinoybadminton that we are not using… Reason? Though we have the legal right to do so, for ethical purposes we are not using it because the Philippine Palm Users Group called MAPALAD has been using this motto even before October 2003. Was this copied by someone? (check and verify the date in http://www.mapalad.org/viewthread.php?tid=455)

What we want? It’s plain and simple… Make Pinoybadminton the way it was envisioned to be and to correct certain actions committed by Kelvin which really destroyed the bond that held Pinoybadminton.

Another challenge to the reader specially those who have access to Kelvin’s forum now that he has started posting again… Do all his reasons add up? Are you satisfied with the reasons he has been giving? Has he categorically denied ever doing the things posted in this blog? Is there sense to his answers?

This blog merely documents the significant events which changed the course of the group. It was Kelvin who destroyed himself and the ideals of Pinoybadminton and not this blog. As this may be one sided, actual people, events, places and links are mentioned for verification of information. Verify if you really care.

Kelvin may not realize it but this move may actually clear up what he did in the past… unless... he himself has that hidden agenda.

As expected, Kelvin would answer allegations without any basis but resort to accusations and namecalling. If he thinks this is a blog of lies then the ball is in his hands. As I have said, I have mentioned REAL people, REAL links and REAL events which the reader can verify anytime.

What Kelvin does not know is that I have in my possession, FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS of those people who were affected which became my source in writing this blog. I had to sanitize some as they were derogatory in nature but from their revelations, I strategically omitted some facts so I could use them as material in case Kelvin denies the stories I have presented. In other words, there is more to reveal than what is written on the surface.

After a hectic day during the first day of the 2006 MVP Cup just last Friday, a former Commissioner of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) who is an avid badminton player/sponsor/contributor in the past 5 or so years and knew of Kelvin’s doings in the past just said to our group, “At last, you’ve seen the light!” when he found out that we had broken away from Kelvin…

…it’s really Kelvin’s word against not just mine, but others as well… if he does not care, we do… and that was the REAL start of the conflict.

Perhaps Kelvin does not remember why the PB Logo and Name were registered by others despite our recommendation MONTHS BEFORE the incident happened… when he COULD HAVE and when he SHOULD HAVE done so in the first place before other groups OUTSIDE PB who wanted to retaliate because of the hundreds of domain names he had registered for the purpose of selling them at outrageous prices.

I wonder if he remembers that Shangri-la meeting with Dez, Jun, Erwin, Koosh and others who wanted to fastrack the incorporation in the early part of 2005. In fact we, including Kelvin, wanted it done within that week but he was having trouble stating objectives so we did it for him. In that same meeting, Corporate Lawyer Erwin Gavino warned Kelvin that he (Kelvin) had to register the name and logo of Pinoybadminton in the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) if he wanted to protect those under his name before people from other groups do so. Legally, his not registering it despite our recommendation months before (and constantly reminding him) would only mean that he was not interested at all.

Would he have rather had another group register the Logo and Name and also give an outrageous price versus people from PB, who we know we could work with, register the logo and name? In my one-on-one meetings with him (which he tried to avoid), I told him that EVERYONE was willing to work with the other... it was only Kelvin who did not want to work with them.

Was not this also the reason why TO KELVIN’S KNOWLEDGE and CONCURRENCE that I reserved the name Pinoybadminton, Inc in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as early as January, 2004? That he knew that I was spending my own funds in renewing the reservation? That this was the direction we agreed upon?

Hidden Agenda? The reason why we incorporated was for transparency not only to our members but also to the laws of the Republic of the Philippines.

Who has anything to hide? My disclosures in this blog regarding his actions in the past which he UNTIL NOW has not resolved has even made me look like a “Bin Laden waging a holy war” because those who would not want to verify the information would think that the stories are exaggerated.

The probable reason why I was banned from his forum was I was asking too much and questions were not being answered. His actions based on the stories of this blog have made PB a laughing stock in the badminton community… Pinoybadminton was more than just a forum as it represented itself beyond the internet. It was ALL of us who made PB possible including Kelvin but unfortunately, his consistent violations against moral, ethical even financial norms were bringing the whole group down. A Call for Help...

A former national head coach called me up last night and informed me that Former Philippine Team member Anthony Ave's house was one of those burned in the Malabon fire of July 10 which left 7,000 people homeless (related story at http://www.philstar.com/philstar/news200607116301.htm).

Ave, who together with Ian Piencenaves, Jojo Mance, Jaime Llanes, Melvin Llanes, Allan de Leon, Naresh Ramnani and Kennevic Asuncion represented the Philippines in several tournaments abroad during the 1990's. Now at his 40s, Ave is a badminton trainer/coach and sometimes would join local tournaments where he could qualify including but not limited to the JVC Open Championships.

I was told that the fire that gutted his house left him with nothing.

TRIVIA... 2 Years of Mondays at Centro Atletico!

On July 5, 2004 Pinoybadminton started its Monday EB in Centro Atletico and has since continued doing so. As my memory could recall, except when forces of nature worked beyond our control, only the Mondays of December 26, 2005 and January 2, 2006 were cancelled due to the Holiday break.

Players who signed up that time aside from Lorna (purple) and I were kelvin, asi, Finance USEC and hidden wealth graftbuster Noel Bonoan (himself never afraid to tell the truth) and his wife Ina, Don and Sheila Cruz, Lawyers Erwin and Lindy Gavino (rocket and baby rocket), bigayhilig, furniture princess sarah, Lawyers TJ and Marnie Matta, Tet (pinkpurple), Viva Films VP Legal Irene Jose, Andresons Sales VP Gerry Francia, tenor Leslie Diaz, entrepreneur Joey Casimiro and oldtimer Kenjie among others.

A certain MRAS (joined 16 June 2005) on July 1, 2006 posted the following in Kelvin’s forum:

After all of the things written dun sa blog, this squabble is beyond repair. A friendly dual meet cannot mend anything.

Matindi yung writer ng blog, this started out as small internet based squabble that became a grudge. He sounds like Bin Laden waging a holy war or a serial killer taunting police, or the exorcist driving the demons out. May mga quotes pa from the newspaper articles and the like... Kulang na lang sabihin niya na anti-Christ ang admin.

The writer should think twice about posted those things in public as all of those things are clear motives just in case something bad happens to this site or to the persons involved.

I would want to make it clear that this is my personal blog and not that of Pinoybadminton, Inc. This blog was started in the middle of February 2006 as I was inspired by a similar blog on the same subject matter though radical in approach (as will be foretold in future posts). The chronology of events are as follows: The PB Panel thread was deleted; This writer was banned by Kelvin probably because I knew or asked too much; This blog was started by the writer; Spontaneous Meetings with other members were held; the agreement to push through with the incorporation; the agreement to get pinoybadminton.com.ph; the formalization of the corporation and the opening of the forums to all.

The forum is just one aspect of Pinoybadminton, Inc where everyone is free to join while another is the PB Club where membership is by invitation in accordance to the corporation's rules and regualtions on membership. The official website will be up soon and presently, SMS alert subscribers of the forum are receiving free updates of on-goings in the badminton world, news of national impact as well as announcements pertinent to the interest of Pinoybadminton members. All these would be explained in future posts.

Let me correct some notions and reactions being posted in Kelvin’s thread about this writer and the contents of this blog:

1. This did not start as a “small internet based squabble that became a grudge”. I wanted to present the TRUE history of the Pinoybadminton forums (started October 23, 2003) from the perspective of somebody who was there from the very beginning. I was there when it was nothing, I was there when we worked to make it something and I was there when somethings went wrong.

2. I may sound like a fanatic out to wage a war but my similarity to the people the poster compares me to would only be my conviction and stubbornness to present the truth about Kelvin’s actions which did so much harm to the Pinoybadminton name. So many times in the past we tried so hard to constantly pick up the blocks which the admin (Kelvin) would recklessly tumble using the PB name. Actual people, posts and events were mentioned which one can verify anytime.

Researching on the poster (MRAS), I would think that in one point in time he was playing in Battledore and with the Smash Philippines group. Perhaps he could ask the Battledore owners (Jojo and Joy Vargas) and the Smash Philippines Foundation, Inc. Board of Trustees on what they know about Kelvin… let it come from them and not from me… He might be surprised that the stories I presented in this blog may make me appear like an angel.

3. I have thought about what I have written and yes I have a motive (as well as the people behind Pinoybadminton, Inc.) and that is to make people aware of the real situation, and to make Pinoybadminton the way it was envisioned to be right from the very beginning when all of you were not even members of the forum. Many of you do not really know the truth (those who signed up only in 2005) because the hidden Panel thread (where people with “positions’ discuss direction for the group) was deleted by Kelvin. Aside from this, so many threads and posts have either been edited or deleted to show only his side (He has deleted more than 200 of my posts which were not offensive and this is just me). Kelvin banned even members who have not violated any rule but just demanded transparency in matters concerning Pinoybadminton.

4. If one has read this blog thoroughly, we have talked to Kelvin several times in the past about suggestions on how to regain the respect for Pinoybadminton, steps to reconcile differences among members and even cover up for the misdeeds, misrepresentation and deception he had committed (all these are documented and have witnesses). No action on his side was taken despite the agreements made. Follow up by text/calls to ALL numbers he had became futile as he would not answer them.

5. Can’t view the mainpage of Kelvin’s forums? We have nothing to do with it as all of those are beyond our control… Kelvin controls whatever he wants seen or unseen in his forum. Many would remember Kelvin’s saying that he can do anything with the forum because “I am god” (even print Private Messages to be shown to people... we have the printed PM in our pocession). I have a suspicion that the mainpage was purposely hidden right now so top posters would not be shown. 90% of the top 20 posters listed on the mainpage who contributed relevant information are involved in Pinoybadminton.com.ph.

6. There was a debate in our group whether to retain the Pinoybadminton name or not but again, the consensus was to keep it since we had the legal and moral right to it (again debatable but there was a consensus and a resolution) . Many of us were challenged to bring back the sanctity in that name which now is the driving force behind what we do. What Kelvin has tarnished, we will try to polish. In the long term, Kelvin might even benefit from this arrangement as his wrongdoing attached to his using PB would be erased by the projects set to be implemented by the group and the goodwill which the corporation will create.

In the legal perspective, the members of the Board of Trustees would be responsible for whatever is attached to the name Pinoybadminton. It is for this reason that we request others not to use the name unless they adhere to the standards which the corporation will require as it is we who would be liable if any trouble is attached to the name.

The name is important to us as we chose to handle it with our reputations at stake (unlike somebody who never cared about reputations).

7. This blog is public so anyone can scrutinize the stories I have presented. They may sound fantastic but they are true. If they are not true then I will admit my mistakes and apologize publicly.

My challenge to members of Kelvin’s forum is if they find my stories credible, will they do something about the situation?

My challenge to Kelvin: Face the truth and do not live a pretentious life… it is not yet too late to make amends to the people you have hurt.

Of Loyalty and Blind Following Part 3...

The person referred to in my previous post added the following to his signature just yesterday…

I have always respected the decision of others but it does not mean that others cannot freely express what they think about it. Funny that it was only I (a banned member of Kelvin’s forum) who could comment on Dave’s signature when it was his friends and fellow forumers who had access were the ones who told me about it since they could not fathom what was written (Just as they told me of an embarrassing incident that happened involving him at the Zone last Thursday night, June 22… but that would be another issue).

Why does he want me to talk to him regarding his signature when he is supposed to know what it means? Are we actually stepping on anyone when we comment on things? Why feel offended when he feels he has enough conviction with his loyalty to his admin?

If he feels that Kelvin had done things to merit his loyalty to him then by all means be ready to bring it out in the open and be ready to face the facts… I may not agree to what he stated but I will defend his right to say it ( An offshoot to a saying misattributed to Voltaire, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it").

Don’t you think that he had made his statement public by stating it in his signature for everyone to see?… Can he actually expect people not to comment on it?

The only difference between the others who laughed at his back and this writer is that I wrote my comments in my blog for those who were interested to know what I thought (there were many) just as he proudly displayed it as his signature for readers of the forum to see… Many could even attest to the fact that he even announced in the shoutbox that he had changed his “signiture”!

The solution is quite simple… If he does not want people to comment (at his back or otherwise), then do not write nor do anything that would elicit a reaction. In this particular case, just delete or amend his signature and my comments would be of no relevance at all!

As readers would notice, I made sure that his name was not even mentioned in my first post http://dlreyes.blogspot.com/2006/05/of-loyalty-and-blind-following.html. Its intention was to serve as an eye opener to those who remained “loyal” to the “admin”. But he brought it upon himself by resorting to namecalling and accusations in his amended signature. I find it funny that namecalling and accusations are familiar to a style being used by the person he is loyal to.

A word of advice… Let us be responsible for what we say and do because people are always on the lookout.

Upon seeing this, I would have reacted violently if I were 30 years younger… At 40, age, experience and family have taught me that violence begets violence and nothing shall come out of it.

Though I abhor politics, my family has been entrenched politically for the past 30 years despite the changes of administrations. I am proud to say however that our name has not been tainted in any way except for some insults thrown at us by our political opponents who turn out to be our allies after they realize from constituents that our intentions are noble and sincere. I was being positioned to run for governor two decades ago, a position which was held by my father and grandfather, both whose names I carry. But being in the limelight was not my cup of tea.

Instead, I chose to enter the world of business handling MEGA projects of national concern and benefit. My biggest asset was being low key and it was very easy for me to penetrate areas which were infested by armed insurgents. In fact, when I negotiated, the only weapon which could convince them to agree to put up a project in their place was sincerity. I have witnessed how mere simple dreams turn into beneficial reality when we start building them the right way. I have seen the drastic improvement of people’s lives and their places flourish with economic activity and to be honest, the biggest fulfillment I got is not the amount of money I made but rather, knowing that somehow I was able to touch people’s lives by being a part of it all.

I have somewhat mellowed down the past few years as I instill to my daughter the very same values I grew up with… Do what is right and be an agent for change. Many of you know of her achievements at such an early age, a probable indication that we are doing the right thing. But even with this, one may ask Kelvin of the stories of how I successfully fought for consumer rights against Globe, Smart and Sun resulting to better services for their millions of subscribers.

Perhaps, when the person who this post is all about has his own family will he later understand, that wrong things in society should be corrected by the very people who may have the influence to do right. I dread to see my 10 year old daughter grow up knowing that her father once had the chance to make the difference and yet he did not. After all, don’t we go to school to be critics of society and agents for change?

I’m afraid I cannot just leave the situation of Pinoybadminton behind as I feel partly responsible for what it is right now. Has Kelvin changed his ways? Surprisingly, I’ve been receiving reports from Pinoyphotography that he is doing the same modus operandi all over again!

I have chosen the way of the blog as a way of documenting what has transpired and unexpectedly, newer issues just keep popping up giving me reason to write and comment. Such is the case of the newly formulated signature of the person above. Readers of this blog can judge as to what motivated him to write such things.

The database shows that he joined the PB forums of Kelvin almost a year after it was started (July 8, 2004). I do not recall seeing him in any meetings held for organizing projects and special activities nor did I see him in the crucial meeting that we had in Valle Verde Country Club during the summer of 2005... With that kind of involvement, how can he balance the views of the issues at hand?

I do recall however that his claim to fame was holding on to a floormop with his two hands to defend a ganged-up heckling Admin during the “Smashing All The Way Tournament” of December, 2004.

Dave (dhavoo), my friend, it’s not just being happy that matters but it is doing the right thing which matters more. Open your eyes to reality… I have mentioned real people in my blog… ask them to tell you the truth… you may not go far as the people from the places you play know some things too… start from there (That’s a BIG hint already!).

As you would say… “sana ganun parin!!!! one team, one game, one pinoybadminton! walang iwanan!!!!!”

Another Deleted Thread in Kelvin's forum...

A thread with the title Www.pinoybadminton.com.ph New Site? which was started by a certain drjohnny under the subtopic "Badminton Online" of the topic "Pinoy Badminton General Forum" was deleted just today according to one of our informants.

The post read as follows:

(Continued… Meeting of February 2 and the Temporary Forum)

The timetable was set and we had a schedule to follow. The core started to make its move to initiate what was agreed upon during the meeting of January 19, 2006.

A yahoo group was made on January 20 to facilitate communication of the core and the domain pinoybadminton.com.ph was registered on January 24.

A meeting was set on February 2 in Segafredo in Greenbelt to review what was discussed and to tweak the timetable that we had. The following was the Agenda:

1. Review agreements last meeting (January 19, 2006)
2. Streamline timetable of tasks and responsibilities
3. Other matters

So far so good… we were still on schedule.

Next meeting was set on February 10 at Chewy Chua’s residence.

On February 3, a temporary forum was put up to serve as an information base for interaction and discussions among the core group members.

Certain controversial topics in Kelvin’s forum were being mirrored in this site like “Shutting Down PB” and “PB History”. We knew that certain posts in Kelvin’s forum were purposely deleted by him because informants were keeping us updated with the threads and their developments. Records of the original threads are still posted up to this writing. As I mentioned in the past, many concerned people were forwarding us entire threads with corresponding comments and we used the temporary forum to analyze the situation in “the other side”.

The temporary forum was similar to Kelvin’s forum and it was very easy for us to adjust to the format. Our usernames however were spoofs of the old forum. It would not be difficult to identify God, asterisk, Boombastik, powergrabber, the nerve, barumbado, iyakeen, kulitkulit, nangangating tuta and toy_dik among others.

Since a lot of us were either disabled or banned in the old forum, the welcome thread was titled “Welcome to the Banned Wagon”.

Member Levels were as follows: 0-9 Posts were called “Disabled”, 10-49 posts were “Banned” and 50 posts and above were called “Mas Banned Pa Sa Banned”.

There was only one Group and it was called the “Ati-Ban” Gang.

The Forum topics did not differ much from “the other side”… Aside from the “Welcome Thread” and “Main Announcements”, there was “Let’s Play” which kept a record of the people who would play in a particular badminton court on a certain day and the “Equipment Forum” where we talked about reviews and IBF sanctioned equipment.

Despite the spoofs that we had, there was seriousness in the topics that were being discussed and above all, a sense of respect among each other even with the differences of ideas.

I purposely had the Centro Atletico Monday games sign up thread posted in “the other side” as a mirror of our temporary site to show people that despite being banned, we could still fill up the slots. I am very grateful to Tom “Pecto” Enriquez for being very accommodating in using his capacity as Event Moderator in “the other side” for posting our sign up thread.

The “Banned Panel” was a password protected portion of the forum for the core group to discuss its strategy and to post discussions on private matters concerning corporate affairs, organization, marketing, promotions and branding. Such was the name as most of us were members of the deleted Panel of Kelvin.

Looking back, I find it funny as Kelvin formed the Panel as an Advisory and Consultative body in which he later turned against through his deception and his betrayal of the very members he gathered for this purpose. Perhaps all is not lost if he realizes the hurt he has given to a lot of people and the mistakes he had committed and make amends to the very institution that was formed. Perhaps is a sketchy word but anything is possible in this topsy turvy world.

The now famous “kulit kulit” post of Kelvin created a spontaneous response among the members of the PB Panel save for a very handful. Just through text messaging, a meeting was set on January 19, 2006.

Looking back, I find it funny now that Kelvin himself never actually called a meeting to organize or to talk about things. The first and only time the Panel met before this was when the members of the panel met with Kelvin sometime May of 2005 at the Valle Verde Country Club to confront him of some issues. That meeting almost did not push through as Kelvin wanted to back out in the last minute.

Going back, there was a jovial atmosphere when 10 of us met in that fateful evening on the 2nd floor of the Dome Café at The Podium that 19th of January. Chewy brought out his notebook which had a PLDT WeRoam wireless access as I brought out my old trusty Celeron run IBM Thinkpad which was connected to a wireless broadband service I was testing called EVDO . We were both checking what was going on in pinoybadminton.com as we were not yet banned from viewing nor posting at that time.

We knew however that knowing Kelvin’s attitude and his erratic way of thinking, it was just a matter of time before we would be disabled or banned and so we had to plan our moves.

We were comparing notes and laughing at what was going on when we had to get down and talk about business.

The following were discussed and agreed upon:

1. Launch another badminton forum ---www.pinoybadminton.com.ph
Next Steps:
a. Procurement of web domain http://www.pinoybadminton.com.ph/
Date due: End January 2006
b. Incorporation of the organization – SEC and DTI

2. Pinoybadminton Incorporated will be registered as a non-stock non-profit organization with the members nominating the board of trustees: (still open for nominations)

3. The initial members of Pinoybadminton Incorporated were listed down.

We agreed that aside from the usual mobile phone communications, we would put up a temporary forum and yahoo group to post the developments.

Next meeting was to be held in 2 to 3 weeks time to a place agreed upon in the temporary site.

As a review of what transpired, let us recall what Kelvin did when my wife Lorna (aka purple) brought the issue up again in the now deleted PB Panel last January 9, 2006:

Despite these statements we did not quit but we were obviously irked by the way he responded as it just confirmed that he is incapable of proper decorum and proper attitude in handling a big group of people.

Knowing that the older members knew of his modus operandi, it seemed that he was capitalizing on the newer members who did not know of his background as his base to support him.

Apparantly to raise some money for reasons we do not know, he put up a Donation thread which initially was not being minded at all. Sooner than later, he was posting that this person or this group was contributing to his effort of maintaining the site to make the thread prominent lest it be forgotten.

Enough was enough as it concerned money again without the proper documentation. I had to stand up and post and ask him for the nth time as to how much had to be raised and for what reason since he NEVER, I repeat NEVER did he answer anything that required his accounting of the money that would be used for a specific purpose.

I have not violated any rule... if there was anyone here who
violated anything please check the Board Rules on due process in
banning a member... Was purple given due process?

We're just trying to be objective here and confine everything with
reason. Is that hard to ask?

I've been in PB for a long time now... even defending you up to now
but please act with reason.

Going back... How much is needed so people can donate the approprate
amount? We should have a target amount right?

It's a simple request which was answered in a crooked and defensive
way...

We used to give our excess if any but ever since there was a
breakdown in communications and questions like these were not being
answered we decided to re-channel efforts to something clearer...

Again, my records in the breakdown lead only to EB costs not PB site
maintenance.

I remember during the discussion that we were suppose to raise funds
for the site and even salary for Kelvin. If we are "paulit-ulit" it
is because our questions and concerns were NEVER answered.

He claims to have posted it in the PB Panel thread before but I dare him bring it out again if ever it existed as I lay claim that more than anyone in PB, I would know about the information that had been posted since the very beginning.

This action of questioning him with the result of not being answered I guess led to my being banned. I am just guessing because the real reason was not told. Up to the very end we were willing to help him but it was he who rejected us.

I never realized the support we had when people found out that we were banned from the very forum we help build. There was an outpour of text messages, email, calls etc. telling us that what we did was right.

We were being updated as to what was happening by concerned members by emailing to us whole threads of certain topics like the “Closing PB thread” and other controversial threads and posts which would appear in one minute and dissappear in another.

We knew who were silent about the issues preferring not to comment because they knew something...

We knew who were commenting because they did not know anything...

We knew of people who were posting to urge sympathy towards Kelvin...

And, we knew of new people who were previously unknown to us who suddenly took interest in the issues of PB and Kelvin (pun intended).

Let it be made clear… we never asked help from anyone… instead, there was a spontaneous response to what happened which led to what I now consider as the core group which formed the present Pinoybadminton, Inc. One text message led to another and a meeting was set… January 19, 2006 at the Dome Café, The Podium.

Of Loyalty and Blind Following...

I was recently amused by somebody's signature in Kelvin's forum. It stated, "my loyalty will forever stand with pinoybadminton.com and to the admin!"

Loyalty is faithfulness or devotion to a person or cause. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Loyal - faithful to those persons, ideals, etc that one is under obligation to defend or support. (From Webster's New World Dictionary of the English Language)

Let me ask for the nth time... What are the ideals, objectives of Kelvin when Pinoybadminton was started?
Answer: He never had any as he asked permission to copy the objectives I wrote for the group. (Check the early parts of this blog.)

Question: What does it mean by being loyal to the admin (Kelvin) despite knowing that many times, in many documented instances and as much more many references that he has brought shame, distrust, dishonesty, betrayal and not to mention blasphemy to the group?

Answer: For those who have remained loyal to him, we pray that you attempt to do things in order to correct his ways as we attempted many times to do so in the past lest be called Blind Followers. We never ceased to help him... It was he who rejected us...

Question: If one still remains to be loyal to the admin (Kelvin), whose interests are you protecting? Kelvin's? or Pinoybadminton's? If one knows that what he is doing is wrong and do nothing about it, can you be considered as an accomplice?

A little after noontime of May 19, 2006, a certian divemastermike posted under the PB History thread (http://forum.pinoybadminton.com/index.php?showtopic=8186&st=60) a reference to a site which had good racket reviews (pertaining to www.pinoybadminton.com.PH). For all intensive purposes, Kelvin deletes the post and instead answers a question posted by a certain nluciano94...

The New Lexicon Webster's Dictionary of the English Language would define "to found" as "to establish an institution by endowment."

"Institution" in the same source is defined as "an organization whose purpose is to further public welfare, learning etc."

Pinoybadminton (PB) as an institution is entirely different from PB as a forum. As an institution, there should be a purpose aside from an organization...

Can someone ask Kelvin what his purpose is? Has it been made clear to everyone? Many times he had been asked that question and many times he says he will state it... For more than two and a half years, what is it???

Is there an organization in the PB forums of Kelvin? There may be titles given to some people but do they actually know what they shall do?

Based on the defintions above, can we rightfully conclude Kelvin's claim that he "founded" PB?

I may somewhat agree that he started the forums but its growth and development could be attributed to those who really cared about the long term existence of not just the forum but more importantly, an institution which could go beyond personalities... an institution with clear objectives and direction...

Where is Kelvin's PB forums going to?

How can Kelvin "found" PB when he was against the institution anyway?

The institution had been founded, and the institution is Pinoybadminton, Incorporated. It had been registered under the Laws of the Philippine Republic so it could be scrutinized not only by its members but by the general public... Unfortunately, Kelvin would not want a part of it despite the fact that it was presented to him several times not only as a vehicle to cover up his wrongdoings but more importantly, to preserve the ideals of the very people who tried to take care of it against all odds.

Pinoybadminton, Inc. dares to take the challenge of the advocacy it has chosen to take.

Kelvin? I pray that he sees reality and make amends to the people he had hurt.

Makes me suspicious as to who it is... In any case, I hope the message gets across.

I apologize for not having updated this blog as several work and family related issues have come up. Also, there were some concerns in my other advocacies which have surfaced and needed to be addressed.

Nevertheless, my draft for the Aftermath had been ready and just needs to be refined.

Please support Tom (Pecto), Peewee and Michelle (cutekoosh) in their efforts to keep the Tuesday and Thursday Battledore groups alive. Their commitment far outweighs any personal gain one can achieve in organizing these games (Bato-bato sa langit, matamaan huwag magalit).

We also appreciate the understanding of Jojo and Joy Vargas, owners of Battledore, who, through simple negotiations were able to reach a compromise that would be of benefit to all parties concerned.

Just SOME comments I have received... SOME because I had to hold MANY which were either unverified, below the belt or too personal which would involve other people. To this very moment, I have been receiving information of the things he had done and has been doing.

Remember... we were willing to help Kelvin up to the very end... It was he who rejected our constant reminder for him to change by banning us altogether...

From a reader I do not know…
This is the first time I read the blog of Mr. dlreyes about the truth of Pinoybadminton and I am not shocked. A little history, I was an employee of Eastern Telecom where the admin was an employee before. Became a member of Pinoybadminton, because i was invited by the admin. I was spearheading a group of employees to play badminton and have arranged with a certain court where we can play MWF. Kelvin then was joining us for fun and play. All the while behind my back, Kelvin was organizing games for the same group at another court at the same day and time. What happened was nobody attended my sessions anymore and minsan ako nga lang magisa dumating sa reservations ko. Na-bwisit talaga ako kay Kelvin noon, and kami ang nagreport sa management ng Eastern na ginagamit nya ang facilities ng companya for his own gain. Marami pang katarantaduhan na ginawa yan sa opisina, immoral scandals, etc....

That is why I am not shocked that he got beaten up and why he has a lot of issues with other members. Kaya rin ako umalis ng PB.com kasi alam ko na sya ang admin at alam ko kung paano sya magisip. Until now mainit pa din dugo ko dyan...

I use to be a non-active member of PB until nagkaroon kami ng sagutan ng Kelvin …. Actually …. I was able to read all the post ng committee nyo about the smashphilippines domain … someone was updating me from the inside ….. Nakita ko rin kung paano nya sinabi sa grupo nyo na mayabang daw ako… sa madaling salita … ang bait nyang kausap noong una pero binaliktad nya ako sa huli …..

Wala naman syang sinabi sa akin kungdi … I repeat ….. “HE’s ONLY A BUSINESSMAN WITH LOT”S OF MONEY” with that statement gusto ko sana sabihin… sino mayabang sa aming dalawa.. sya o ako …. Hehehehhehe

Anyway to avoid the rift between PB and smashphilippines … we decided to just let it go ….

We have nothing against Pinoy Badminton ….. just Kelvin …. And naiintdihan ko naman during that time na maraming kumakampi sa kanya dahil binabaliktad nya lahat ng story … never the less… naamoy ko na noon na HE WAS REALLY JUST AFTER MILKING YOU GUYS ….. anyway naintidihan ko naman …. You people being good natured … syempre always giving him the benefit of the doubt ….. I just heard that Kelvin cancelled the Battledore Games on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of May...

What could be the reason? Low attendance despite the text brigade to prod people to join?

Mismanagement? hmm...

I would not wonder as it would be typical of him to let go of a problem instead of solving it. For him it would be easier to leave everything hanging and let others worry about the problem.

Remember the forum? If he can't handle it, Simple! Edit, Delete, Demote, Disable then Ban!

How consistent.

Nevertheless, we hope the problems in Battledore would be addressed by those who really care about playing there.

Congratulations to those who were “promoted” recently in Pinoybadminton.com.

Before anything else, have you asked what your responsibilities are?

Would you know why you were put there in the first place?

Were you made aware of what you are going to do?

You might wonder what ever happened to those who were “officers” who were supporting Kelvin before. Most of them have seen the “light” and hope you would too in the soonest possible time. We hope you would also seek the truth and have the courage to tell him what is wrong rather than be puppets of his manipulation.

Unfortunately, I have found out recently that no one except Pinoybadminton Inc. could use and have full rights to the Pinoybadminton name.

Any misrepresentation of Pinoybadminton including those of but not limited to Kelvin Montalbo is punishable by law. I would suggest that one does not use the name Pinoybadminton in any of the EBs nor print the name in materials unless it has the prior consent of Pinoybadminton, Inc.

Pinoybadminton, Inc. is registered under Company Reg. No. CN200604798 of the Securities and Exchange Commission in accordance with the Corporation Code of the Philippines (Batas Pambansa Blg. 68).

The incorporators are made up of professionals and emulated in their fields: 4 lawyers, 4 businessmen/entrepreneurs (2 are personalities in Philippine badminton), 3 in marketing/advertising, and 2 in IT.

For the past two and a half months, careful analysis and positioning have been tuned to meet the demands and needs of Pinoybadminton… the way it should be… a REAL and NOT VIRTUAL existence… taking full responsibility and direction towards the good of the many.

This event which was being looked forward to and was being announced within the dental circles as early as 5 months before the tournament proper could have excited everyone especially with a lot of sponsors backing it up.

Such were the expectations of Dr. Fenella Galvan or badgirl as she was known in Pinoybadminton.

Unknown to many, Fenella’s attractive smile revealed little semblance that behind that powerful smash was one of the Philippines’ young but respected pediatric dentists. She is one of the directors of the Philippine Dentists’ Development Cooperative and heads the membership committee of the Philippine Pediatric Dental Society, Inc.

Past tournaments of other Dental Societies proved that there is a big market for her passion of badminton more especially because it was easy to get sponsorships from companies supporting the dental industry much like the support pharmaceutical companies give to medical practitioners.

Swooned by the charisma of Kelvin not knowing of his background, it was easy for Fenella to put her trust to the so called initiator of the Philippines’ biggest source of information in badminton. After all, what better way to promote a tournament then getting Kelvin to organize the tournament itself thinking that it would attract interest easier.

Much to her dismay, Kelvin was the source of intrigues which made it more difficult to market the project. Word had already spread about his reputation and intentions that interest in the 1st PPDSI Badminton Cup waned when people knew that it was a certain Kelvin Montlabo who was organizing the tournament. The lure of cash and big item prizes plus T-shirts and lootbags did not stop potential participants from asking why Kelvin Montalbo?

Petty things like pinoybadminton.com hosting the tournament details instead of PPDSI’s site were also being questioned as intentions were not made clear. Fanella had to answer each and every question the PPDSI Board would ask as she had to assure them that everything would be alright.

Despite this however, the stigma of “Smashing All the Way” where Kelvin was beaten up because of his jeering continued to give bad light to the tournament organizer. There were 3 categories with 4 levels each category and past tournaments would yield more than 100 pairs of total participants for this kind of event but things were not turning out as expected. Many of those who intended to join were suddenly backing out.

The 1st PPDSI Badminton Cup had to be postponed due to this circumstance. As announced on April 3, 2005:

“To all participants:Due to a lot of requests from differents chapters and societies, PPDSI has moved the tournament to May 22, 2005, Sunday, 8 am to 6pm @ Yonex Badminton Club”

All requests of Kelvin were being granted by Fenella to make the tournament a success slowly realizing that time was not really the problem but Kelvin himself. Yet commitments had to be honored and the tournament must be salvaged at all costs.

It should be noted that full payment in cash was given to Kelvin for court expenses to be incurred before the postponement of first tournament date (before April 17).

Going back, out of the expected minimum of 100 pairs, only around 40 pairs confirmed and this was really bad. I would not know the intentions of Kelvin but perhaps he knew that there was going to be a lot of extra courts during that day, a thread was opened in Pinoybadminton on May 16, 2005:

kelvin: Play all you can @ Yonex, 8am to 5pm, May 22, Sunday, pls include member # and time of arrival

kherix: how much po ang damage ng game na to? bwehehehehehe 9 hrs nandun sa yonex??

kelvin: depends.. around P150 to P180

kelvin: anyone else??? game pa to! basta punta nalang kayo.. sayang court e.

Darkhalf: kahit mga di sure, sign up na. basta punta na lang kayo!

I could not understand at this point if Kelvin was really authorized to charge outsiders for the use of the courts or whether the proceeds would go to PPDSI or to his own pocket since it was assumed that the courts were already paid for in full.

The final list in the sign up thread were only the following:

1. Kelvin (he had to be there)
2. darkhalf (Dez)
3. keefe (Kelvin’s 9 year old son)
4. badgirl (Fenella, she had to be there)
5. franklin (Fenella’s special friend)
6. teejay (boyfriend of Dez)

For some reason, just after midnight of the tournament proper, probably to spite members from not taking advantage of his offer, Kelvin posted the following:

kelvin: sayang...FREE games to kanina

And we thought that problems would be over… a week after the spacious tournament, Fenella received a call from a certain Gerry of Yonex Courts informing her that courts were not paid for yet. She thought he was joking as she had already paid Kelvin in full for all the expenses to be incurred BEFORE the first tournament date (April 17) which was more than a month before the realized date (May 22)!.

A confrontation ensued and Kelvin promised to settle it. Despite being paid in full, Kelvin issued several post dated checks to Yonex Court.

What happened to the money?

Where did it go?

Reports have reached me that Fenella was berated by the Board and officers of PPDSI for having Kelvin organize the tournament for them. She is seldom seen posting nor attending EBs of Pinoybadminton because of this experience… a temporary dent to an otherwise successful and thriving career.

A LEADER`S WAY

CREDIBILITY is a leader's currency. With it he or she is solvent; without it he or she is bankrupt.

Consider this metaphor: A leader with credibility has a pocketful of coins. As long as the pocket is full, the leader is believable, worthy of respect, and able to be trusted. Each time the leader breaks a promise or acts inconsistently with professed values, he or she must pay out some of the coins in their pocket.

When the coins are gone, so is the leader's credibility. No amount of persuasion or personal appeal will be able to buy it back. Once lost, respect and trust take years to regain.
Here are the four keys to establishing credibility in your leadership:

1) Speak the truth.
Be honest and upfront. Transparency breeds legitimacy--make it a priority to be open with financial statements, policies, and decision-making rationale.

2) Don't hide bad news.
With corporate scandals at Enron, WorldCom, and Arthur Andersen seared in our collective memories, we have entered an era in which transparency is demanded like never before. With multiple information channels available, bad news always becomes known, so it behooves management to be candid right from the start.

3) Never over-promise.
Do not make promises you cannot keep. Why do you think politicians have such a poor reputation? It's very simple. They promise the world and seldom deliver.

4) Do what you say you will do.
Follow up and follow through. Unfortunately, many in the corporate world politely make offers with no intent of carrying them out. After meetings and phone calls, follow up with a reminder e-mail outlining the action items discussed and agreements made.

As a leader, how can you restore damaged credibility? Let me give you three steps.

1) Acknowledge the mistake
When decisions turn out unexpectedly, the leader owes his or her followers an explanation. The egos of leaders can make them quick to assign blame or make excuses, but the problem compounds when a leader does not acknowledge mistakes. The acknowledgement should be on the front end, and should be voluntary. A forced acknowledgement ("Because I got caught, I'd like to acknowledge this") does nothing to reestablish trust.

2) Apologize
Admit what you did was wrong, accept responsibility, and say you are sorry. To do it may be painful for the moment, but it will shorten the agony and enable the leader to put the incident behind him or her.

3) Make amends
Find a way to make amends to the people you've wronged. Make restitution to those you've harmed. You may not be required to do so, but a trustworthy leader goes the extra mile to remedy strained relationships.

Prayer for the Holy Week

Lord, we seek Your guidance in our thoughts, words and action as we commemorate Your sufferings and eventual glorification through the Your eventual resurrection.

Purify our intentions that we may do no wrong among our fellow men and through the spirit of sacrifice, help us to overcome the temptation of material benefit achieved through deception, lies and hidden intentions.

We ask for Your forgiveness in the things that we have done which have offended others as we wish others to do the same.

We pray for Pinoybadminton and its members, that they may be inspired to seek what is reality and what is the truth.

We also pray for Kelvin, that despite his actions and accusations, let his good nature overcome whatever clouds his judgment so that he may see the good in everyone instead of satisfying his selfish desires.

We take time to reflect on these days as we wait for that day of redemption which will soon be coming.

Thank you for Your presence. Thank you for the motivation that keeps us going. Thank you for the people who continue to help us. Thank you for giving us opportunities to do something good.

Jingle Bells Jingle Bells, Smashing all the way,
Who’s to blame, for that shame, the admin beaten up, Hey!

Prelude: A week or two before Smashing All the Way, a tournament was held in Club 650 where a certain Kelvin Montalbo was reprimanded as he was heckling near the court using a megaphone. Kelvin went further but continued to use the megaphone to continue to jeer the opponents of PB players.

Incidentally, a similar incident was also reported in Powersmash prior to this incident where a certain Kelvin of Pinoybadminton was also encouraging heckling and jeering during a tournament.

December 3 and 4, 2004. Smashing All the Way Tournament. Yonex Badminton Court.

It was a Women’s doubles quarter finals match between PB players (Kit and Malen) against players from the Galaxy Badminton Club of Malabon. The intense game was coupled with cheering from both sides rooting for their teams. One cannot disclose that there was pressure building up not only between the competitors but also from their supporters.

The cheering turned into jeering and heckling spearheaded by a PB member (Marlon aka tuliro, brother of Malen) and supported by, of all people, the PB admin, Kelvin Montlalbo.

It was quite clear that the jeering was meant to distract the players and phrases like “Kulang ka lang sa tuwad” (“You lack bending down” (usually pertaining to a sexual position where one is bent down with the head lower than the buttocks)) was overheard.

One account would state that the player from Galaxy approached Marlon and Marlon apparently clapped his hands and in turn offending not only her but her husband as well.

Marlon and Kelvin according to witnesses, stayed and continued what they were doing until a group of people apparently from the Malabon group approached them. The next thing eyewitnesses saw was a melee involving Kelvin and the Malabon group.

From Marlon’s own words…

"My apologies to the Malabon group whom I have offended. Let me just clarify one thing...I did not utter any single foul or indecent word or even below the belt words during that match. One thing I still don't understand is why did they gang up on another PB member (pertaining to Kelvin) when I was the target of their ire."

Yes… why did they gang up on Kelvin?

Let me dissect Kelvin’s version assuming it was the right one.

"tuliro was cheering really hard for her sister malensky.. ''hard''I was beside him... ''watching the game'' & coaching kit & malen on what to do. ...the opponents got offended by tuliro's cheering & approached tuliro... Exchanging words.... Tuliro even clapped his hands in front of the girl. (but some would say, if this happened to my wife they will get mad & react also. But for I would tell her focus in the game & don’t mind the audience) After the scene walk away rin yung 2 ladies. (tapos na dapat)."

Kelvin knew of Marlon’s actions and it was distracting the players already and yet he does not do anything about it…

"But theres this pink skirt girl whole made hatak sa group nila... 7 to 10 people where there & approached tuliro...saying ''problema niyo pre'' up to his face, I was even holding them back... and I said ''I don’t see anything wrong with it, if you have problems tell it to the organizers or umpire'' then theres this guy who immediately threw an elbow at me.... Then the rest is history."

He does not see anything wrong with it? Nothing wrong with jeering and heckling? Nothing wrong with a provocative action meant to distract the other side?

Again, we already find fault in Kelvin’s version of the incident. I have heard of other versions coming from Pinoybadminton members who were actually near them and other spectators as well which I assure you are quite far from what he has stated.

Nevertheless, the incident had sent waves of reaction regardless of which version is right. And for the sake of fairness and available documentation, I chose to critisize his.

Perhaps he has not read the Pinoybadminton thread on the history of badminton. He probably does not know that the sport was started by the nobility and was meant to be a gentleman’s sport much like tennis is. Those who are familiar with the sport have probably seen how a match is played on television.

I would have understood it if it were a World Wrestling Federation fight or a boxing match where the principals are prepared for violence but even the higher forms of martial arts demand a refined audience.

Assuming for the sake of argument that a person threw an elbow at Kelvin, was it right that one throws a punch right away knowing that he was representing Pinoybadminton and its ideals?

Many really wonder why there was so much hatred released on Kelvin that day… perhaps, reading through the Prelude of this post and my posts previous to this would give a better understanding for those who are new to Philippine Badminton.

On a sad note however, all the hard work and effort poured in trying to give Pinoybadminton a better name was overshadowed by the effect of this event.

“Good morning, I’m from Pinoybadminton…”
“Pinoybadminton? Di ba yan yung may admin na nabugbog?” (“Isn’t it that your admin got beaten up”)

Pride - a reasonable or justifiable self-respect : delight or elation arising from some act, possession, or relationship

I would have thought that Pinoybadminton’s number of members, accomplishments and exposure would make it worthy of respect.

By our first year anniversary, we were the undisputed source of information, comments and feedback on anything related to Philippine badminton. We had the largest, broadest membership base unprecedented by any badminton online group in the Philippines. Some of our posts were being quoted in Badminton related publications and Chewy Chua’s reviews were being published.

Pinoybadminton mediated in conflicts between it’s members and some suppliers, court owners, tournament organizers and even the press. Former national coach and now a much sought after trainer Badong Banquiles was sponsored by the group in the US Open held in Orange County, CA where he won first runner up in the Veterans Division. Exposure through the Inquirer Expo definitely did wonders but who would have imagined that Pinoybadminton had representatives in the 2004 JVC Open Tournament? (names withheld upon their request)

We were all proud to be Pinoybadminton that personal resources and efforts were being given whole-heartedly in the name of the group.

Knowing all these, one would think that Pinoybadminton would surely be a group worthy to be featured in any publication. True enough, I have received quite a number of Personal Messages (PMs) over at the forum asking if I could be interviewed regarding Pinoybadminton. As a matter of courtesy, I would refer them to Kelvin Montalbo since he was the perceived spirit behind the group. Since that time up to this moment, I have not read anything about PB.

Not even Inquirer Badminton of which we have a very good relationship has released anything on Pinoybadminton. I told Kelvin that as part of our package in the Expo, we were entitled to a press release which he never took advantage of. It was one way of promoting Pinoybadminton as a group. What he worked on recently instead was to have one of the photos he shot to serve as cover of the publication so as to elevate himself as a legitimate photographer, a self-serving purpose.

Sometime in the third week of November, 2004, I was told by Kelvin that he had invitations to the first anniversary of Badminton Philippines Magazine. The grand affair was to be held at the Rizal Ballroom of the Manila Shangri-la Hotel in November 26, 2004. Our group would be composed of Kelvin, Dez, Teejay and myself.

Who would not be excited as we knew that several badminton luminaries would be present in that affair? At last, I told myself, Pinoybadminton had been recognized as a legitimate entity by merely being recipients of the invitations.

We agreed to meet by the reception table at 8pm sharp so we could get in together as the invitations were with Dez. As it turns out, I was the only one on time and was told by Kelvin via mobile phone that I could go ahead inside as we were in the masterlist of invitees.

I gave my name to the reception as I did not have an invitation to present… No such name listed. What about Pinoybadminton? Search again… no such entity listed.

I was really getting uneasy as I did not want to look like a gatecrasher and it was a good thing that the receptionist noticed that a number of people recognized me and were talking badminton with me. She asked for my business card and in turn I gave her my Pinoybadminton card and then she let me in.

The first anniversary of Badminton Philippines Magazine gave due credit to the “Movers and Shakers of Philippine Badminton’. These people were the cover of their anniversary issue which was launched that evening. Among them were Amelita Ramos and Gen. Aglipay of the PBA, Nelson Asuncion, Kaz Salud of JVC, Jimmy Seth of Sunrise, IMG’s Princess Galura, Chibby Velez, Richard Gomez and Noel Silvestre of Smash Philippines, Inc.

Kelvin, Dez and Teejay arrived and we started going around to socialize. It was a very well thought of occasion as people were made to mingle in a no chair, no table set up. At the center of the room was the buffet table serving sumptuous Shangri-la signature dishes served cocktail style for the convenience of the attendees. All these complimented by ice and chocolate carvings amidst a play of lights and music.

Sponsors were overflowing as around 20 cellphones, plane tickets, gift packs and a lot more items were raffled off. I would say that around 85% of those who attended came home with a raffle prize to compliment the usual giveaways.

How we envied and wished that Pinoybadminton could hold such a grand affair in the future.

Later that evening, still feeling quite uneasy being branded as a gate crasher, I then asked Kelvin how they were able to get in since Pinoybadminton was not in the list of those invited. It turns out that the invitations issued were for Nokia, one of the sponsors of the event and the company where Dez works.

Feeling embarrassed about the situation, I immediately removed my nametag where I was identified as Pinoybadminton. Imagine the pride that was in me suddenly shattered into broken pieces of shame and embarrassment. I felt like a prince transformed into a beast about to be scorned by people if I don’t watch my every move.

Perhaps, it could have been slightly different if Kelvin informed me that we were to use the invitations issued to Nokia… a different protocol could have been used and I would not have forced myself to represent Pinoybadminton.

Sources from inside however had informed me that they were very well aware of the achievements of Pinoybadminton but its reputation was not very well received… all because of one single person… Kelvin Montalbo.

By the First Inquirer Badminton Expo of June 5 and 6, 2004, we were boasting that Pinoybadminton was the most active, most informative and fastest growing Philippine based badminton online community. The Expo gave an ego boost to its identity as PB had not one but two booths all to its own. It gave us pride to be positioned with the movers of Philippine badminton and the level of awareness towards the group had been raised. We were able to get a master list of participants and some have even volunteered to be sponsors for future projects and tournaments. I gave the master list to Kelvin and pointed to him who are willing to sponsor what, but again, I never heard of anything from him after that.

A little more than a month after the Expo (July 2004), we surpassed the number of Smash members making Pinoybadminton the largest badminton online group in the Philippines… and the numbers continued to grow despite not having a formal recruitment program.

I found out later that Rory Alcantara and Kelvin met at about this time to settle their differences and part of the agreement was to remove the redirection of smashphilippines.com to pinoybadminton. Rory was in the forefront of the issue against cyber squatting done specifically by Kelvin as she had made known her views to other groups involved in badminton. Some of these groups were very influential.

Nevertheless, the harm had been done and the purpose of increasing membership to surpass that of Smash had been achieved.

We would like to believe that that the reason they wanted to join Pinoybadminton was to have reference to sources and opinions on anything regarding badminton more specifically in the Philippine setting rather than searching for Smash and being redirected to pinoybadminton.

The reviews of Chewy Chua (now also banned) became a thread to look forward to as a starting point in making a decision to purchase badminton equipment. Announcements, facts and opinions on tournaments and events were being referred to by those concerned. Threads were being posted as a creative way to stimulate opinion and generate facts on anything that would pertain to badminton. There were instances where inside and advance information would be revealed to the benefit of all. Eyeballs (EBs) were being posted as a venue for interaction to apply theory and to have fun.

We were doing something right and the collective efforts of people did not fail to raise the expectations of others… or so we thought.

Being the largest, the most active, the most informative trendsetting online badminton community in the Philippines, one would expect a certain degree of recognition or at least a semblance of respect from other groups but this was not so as we were living in our own world oblivious of our external relationships with other groups.

Invitations to a Grand EB of Online Groups to be held at the Powersmash Court on August 21, 2004 were being circulated to different badminton related yahoo and web based groups a little more than a month before the actual event.

There was much talk within badminton circles of this unprecedented event. Media was cooperative as it promoted the Grand EB in several major newspapers and badminton related publications. Activities and plans by groups based in yahoo heightened in order to culminate in this momentous event.

One would expect Pinoybadminton to be invited being the largest online group… but such was not the case.

The effect of the domain name controversy, which was the action of an individual, was now affecting the whole group. Many of us knew the reason why we were not invited but just preferred to be silent when a thread in PB came out announcing the event.

As the organizers of that event can now attest, Pinoybadminton, the biggest, the most active, the most informative badminton online group in the Philippines was intentionally left out because of just one single person… Kelvin Montalbo

Using the facilities of Eastern Telecom to his advantage, Kelvin had been known to have taken domain names and selling them to the market. This ingenious method of generating income made him either famous or infamous depending on the way someone would look at it.

He once boasted to me that he was able to sell the Ford domain for around Php 700,000 and had been getting other domain names for the purpose of selling them in the future.

When Smash Philippines was encountering problems with their founder Mr. Ross Capili in the early part of 2004, pinoybadminton.com was being used by some Smash members to attack not Smash Philippines but the integrity, credibility and leadership of Mr. Capili.

It was at this point that Kelvin mentioned to me that members of Smash had actually requested him to get the domain Smashphilippines.com so as to protect it from Ross Capili. When Ross was ousted, Smash decided to put their own website and a forum to replace the yahoo group interface they were using.

According to Kelvin, he was selling it at cost to Smash but someone from inside Smash had insulted him making Kelvin raise the price to an outrageous Php 50,000. To add insult to injury Kelvin even redirected smashphilippines.com to pinoybadminton’s site, a move which had its repercussions.

As what was mentioned, Smash was the leading online group at that time. We in Pinoybadminton wanted to position ourselves as a different online group by providing the necessary information on a “what you see” basis rather than that which could be provided via email through yahoo groups as what Smash was doing. We were confident that this would attract potential membership… and it did.

Redirection of other domain names was never in the plan… more so with the redirection of the leading online group to pinoybadminton. Many felt it was a desperate and despicable strategy to get numbers easily since many would seek Smash Philippines being the biggest in membership and would wonder why it would point to pinoybadminton. Naturally, curious seekers would apply for membership in pinoybadminton since they were there anyway. Most found it unethical but Kelvin continued with the redirection.

Of course we had to defend Kelvin because his baby was our baby too. We had to look at all angles and magnify where we could defend him best. We had to do some damage control by suppressing where he did wrong but magnify whatever rights he had.

During the course of discussion with him, Kelvin justified his procurement and selling of the domain name as a right accorded to anyone knowledgeable in those transactions. He mentioned that even before thinking of a business name, one should already make the necessary steps in reserving the name not only in SEC, DTI and other agencies, but also make sure that the domain name is available.

We understood his point but from the moral and ethical point of view, we were about to have a head on collision with Smash Philippines when ideally, our groups should have complimented each other towards the development of Philippine badminton. If there was going to be any competition, it should have been done in a friendly and constructive way.

I remember Rory Alcantara sending me a Private Message regarding the issue of cyber squatting and I had to research on issues of such in order to defend Kelvin. In the meantime, I advised Kelvin to remove the redirection and to use a dummy as the registered owner if he still wanted to keep the domain name because it was putting the whole of pinoybadminton in bad light.

The issue of cyber squatting became the hottest thread at that time. Clearly, the house was divided and I would think that this was the point where Kelvin saw who were for or against him. Obviously, those against him spoke badly of him, some to the point of getting banned. Of those who were for him defended him because of the love of pinoybadminton and believed in the stories he gave us to justify his actions.

My dealings with some of the Trustees/Directors of Smash Philippines Foundation made me realize that Kelvin’s story was twisted to a certain extent.

1. There was never a request for him to reserve the domain name.

2. There was a clear intention to sell the domain at a profit to a non-profit foundation (Smash Philippines).

3. Kelvin was applying pressure to Smash by raising the price of the domain name and publicly making announcements of it (it reached up to Php 50,000).

4. There was bad intent of holding Smash hostage by redirecting smashphilippines.com to pinoybadminton.com.

Confronted as to why he was doing this despite knowing that Smash was a non-stock, non-profit corporation, his unforgettable statement was, “I am just a businessman with lots of money”. (Kelvin's quotable qoute had forever lingered in the minds of Smash directors till this very moment especially Bob N. Betts, Director for Total Internet and Technical Innovations Head)

Negotiations crumbled. The two groups drifted apart. Though some people were members of both groups, there stood an invisible barrier of uneasiness between Smash Philippines and Pinoybadminton.

I first met Kelvin in Shopwise Libis sometime in November 2003, weeks after pinoybadminton started in October 2003. We knew each other by handles and our relationship was based on what we perceived to be the characters of one another based on what we posted in the forum.

How would one want look at someone who has started something with a big potential? I looked at Kelvin as someone who had the best of intentions in promoting and developing an emerging sport/activity called badminton. Badminton was becoming to be the “in” thing and pinoybadminton’s entry had the right timing.

The forum provided a lot of information based on personal experiences when it first started. They were very helpful indeed and even I learned a lot of new things. It however lacked facts which could serve as basis for long term reference, and topics which could be discussed for a longer period of time. I felt that I had some information and materials to share which could add substance to an emerging forum… and this was where I came in.

Through the forum, Kelvin knew that I had a copy of Badminton Interactive, a CD-Rom which offers individual training programs suited to ones need, level and goal (http://www.badminton-interactive.com). I knew that if someone deserved a copy of this, then it would be the person who started the forum. We both agreed to meet each other for the first time in Shopwise Libis as it was a place which would be convenient to both of us. We had some small chit chat and even agreed that copies of the CD-Rom could be given as incentives for deserving members. I never heard of what happened to the CDs after that but there were reports which reached me of which need to be confirmed.

A few weeks after that initial meeting, I met more forumers in a gathering at a place along the corner of E. Rodriguez and Balete Drive in Quezon City. They were there to wind up after a badminton EB in Battledore. We continued to socialize at a nearby videoke bar and handles like Mr. and Mrs Searcher (GerryD?), Rors, Mr. Adventurous, etc suddenly had faces on them. These were now real people we were dealing with and not just obscure names hiding in the internet. After that singing gig, Kelvin gave me one of the first T-shirts that pinoybadminton had and probably one of the best as it has not faded nor shrunk till this very day.

The “Badminton for Streetkids” of January 1, 2004 proved that we could work as a group and even think in the last minute of what we were to do. The activity was proposed and organized by Rory Alcantara but I was expecting that Kelvin would have a hand in organizing the activity since members of pinoybadminton would contribute and share their resources and the forum was being used to brainstorm on ideas. It was an activity, the first one at that, which would put pinoybadminton in good light.

Much to her credit, Rory was able to get the sponsors needed which led to the success of the activity. In all fairness though, Kelvin took pictures of the event and posted it in the pinoybadminton sight.

External activities expose people to one another. Personalities were being profiled according to how they acted. Familiarity with one another created little intrigues which were still manageable at first. But one thing I noticed was the use of character assassination by Kelvin to those he did not favor. Lacking was the effort to address certain problems which would need a reality check. Instead, the virtual reality provided by the internet became a hindrance to the reality that was going on outside the real world.

I remember that the first person in charge of the Battledore games was being profiled as “akala niya ang galing galing niya… mayabang yan, walang alam yan” because of his alleged rejection of some people who want to join Battledore. Instead of dealing with the problem by talking to him nicely, Kelvin resorted into damaging his reputation until he and his wife (also a member of PB) lost interest in badminton.

I write with a total grasp of the history of Pinoybadminton having been there right from the beginning without any biases on the groups involved with badminton.

Pinoybadminton.com was started by Kelvin Montalbo in October 2003 because according to him, there was no venue for discussion which could address the sentiments of the pinoy badminton player. At that time, he was working in the IT Department of Eastern Telecom and as I have confirmed lately through my sources in Eastern, he was using their resources to run the site for free. In fact, the first 10 members of pinoybadminton were people from Eastern which he registered as members so as just to get the site going.

My interest with serious badminton also started in the summer of 2002 when I trained under a Former National player/coach and veterans champion though I took up the sport way back in the early 1990s. It was through this coach of mine that I learned about the politics behind the sport, the people involved and their relationship with each other. I started sponsoring some small tournaments which were held at the Valle Verde Country Club which at that time produced some of the best players outside the AFP.

I joined pinoybadminton a day after it was started when I chanced upon the site. It had the slogan, “ask, share and have fun” which to me was very catchy indeed. I became member #18 and immediately posted some relevant topics to be discussed. There was an abundance of knowledge wanting to be shared.

The biggest group using the internet at that time was Smash Philippines but their presence was limited to emails being used by their yahoo groups. I could not recall of any other forum which would discuss topics and dissect the posts with so much passion and dedication. There were others of negligible presence but they lacked the integrity and credibility of the facts and information being laid out in pinoybadminton.

It was in January 1, 2004, New Year’s Day when pinoybadminton started to represent itself as an entity when PB headed by Rory Alcantara (rors of Baddicts and PB) and with the knowledge and consent of Kelvin, embarked on “Badminton for Streetkids”, an outreach project using badminton as a way to touch the lives of street children.

Events followed one after another and pinoybadminton was being recognized as a group with an identity. At first, courts were being reserved under a particular member’s name but when it became evident that pinoybadminton had the numbers for good business, they would recognize pinoybadminton, the group.

It was an unwritten agreement that active members of the forum could use the pinoybadminton name as long as it had the prior knowledge and consent of Kelvin. It goes without saying that whenever the pinoybadminton name would be used, it would benefit the members of the forum and what it stood for.

With greater reach came greater responsibility. Membership in the forum surpassed expectations despite the fact that plans for extensive recruitment were not being implemented yet.

Our two (2) booths in the 1st Inquirer Badminton Expo of 2004 showcased that pinoybadminton had the ego to be what it takes to be the leading Philippine badminton online group.

While many members were trying to make this dream a reality, there were stumbling blocks along the way…. Sad to say, pinoybadminton's main stumbling block was Kelvin… the admin of pinoybadminton.com. (to be continued).

Taking an extra step beyond pinoybadminton.com… the next phase…

What’s next?

To all those who are or who have been involved with pinoybadminton.com, expect… The Rise of the Phoenix.

The Phoenix is a legendary bird that lived in Arabia. The phoenix consumed itself by fire and a new phoenix sprang from its ashes. Early Christian tradition adopted the phoenix as a symbol of the resurrection, of immortality, and of life-after-death. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity.

Incidentally, the phoenix could be found in Shakespeare's play The Tempest,

The Feng-Huang (pronounced Fung-Wang) is the Chinese version of the phoenix. It’s feathers were of the five fundamental colors: black, white, red, green and yellow and was said to represent the Confucian virtues of loyalty, honesty, decorum and justice.

What I now hear the Admin is saying about me...

What is nice about the forum is that one could always do a SEARCH for references on topics being talked about assuming that the admin would not delete nor change them. As I write on things about what I hear he has been saying lately, I would suggest that the reader whom I would assume would have been connected with PB in some point in time, listen to both parties, check the forums for references, interview others who know what really is going on and separate what is fact from fiction.

I write this article to bring my defense against his accusations against me which he never brought up in the several meetings we had. At first I would not even mind them at all as I would always think that they would have been made up by somebody who would want to destroy the group. But recently I have confirmed through my sources that these have been coming out of his mouth… a prime case of Backstabbing.

1. “Nag-pledge yan ng Php 5,000 para sa 1st Anniversary tapos hindi naman nagbigay kaya na-lugi yung event.”

It is true that I pledged Php5,000 for the 1st Anniversary of Pinoybadminton held in Yonex Court sometime in 2004 which was originally presented on paper in a very grand manner. The cash pledges were supposed to finance the portions of the celebration which could not be sponsored. I was led to believe that a big bulk of it would go to a band costing around Php 30,000. Though questionable I never hesitated to bother as it may just hamper ideas flowing for this occasion… besides, the manager of the band was also an active PB member.

Since all plans were being done by Kelvin and company, the least we were expecting was to be informed of the financial matters. Each participant was asked to pay an entrance fee which would include Play all you can courts and shuttles, catered dinner and raffle prizes. Johnnie Walker had a presentation and in turn also brought sponsored dinner different from the catered one. Despite this, food was not enough as there were people who paid but were not able to eat.

Nevertheless, the band did not push through and instead, entertainment was provided for by my wife Lorna Llames (aka purple, a soprano and who incidentally was one of those who paid but was not able to eat) and Leslie Diaz (aka el tenor, a tenor), both PB members who did it for free (You may ask how much they ordinarily charge per song).

What was disheartening was that a PB member approached me and told me that he overheard Kelvin say…”Si dlreyes, pa-pledge pledge, fa-five thousand lang pala”.

Incidentally, it was also during this occasion that Kelvin drew the ire of Bonito and company when he turned off the lights of the courts without the prior knowledge and consent of the court owners of Yonex, thus, endangering the safety of those on the courts. The people playing on the courts were composed of PB players from Olympic who had prior permission from Yonex owners to play at that time.

Despite all these disappointments (plus the things I do aside from badminton), I was just waiting for Kelvin to either send me a statement of account or just to remind me of the pledge if the money was still needed.

I never heard him say anything after that Anniversary celebration making me think that either the money was not needed or probably he knew that I would use it in other PB projects or events of which I let him always know. The cost of these projects would be discussed in another post.

If ever the event lost money I would not think it was because of a mere Php 5,000 pledge but rather due to poor financial planning and implementation.

Frankly, the only time I heard about this issue was when Dez called a meeting for the planning of the 2nd PB Anniversary sometime in late September of 2005 (almost a year after the incident! The meeting was supposed to be for all officers and I was the only one who attended) and it just confirmed that the admin was trying to build issues against me.

This was probably the result of a friendly talk that transpired between Kelvin and 3 concerned members namely Peewee, Rocket and myself (Frenjick and his brother Josh were eating with Kelvin at that time but did not have any knowledge what the issues were so they left after eating) one Monday midnight at a place called Steakjoint sometime in April or May of 2005. We confronted him about the printing of PMs and other issues including that of Bonito and the bad image PB was getting due to his irresponsible actions.

What I cannot understand is why he cannot tell it to me directly, face to face… Funny thing is, when there are issues concerning PB, I would always want to resolve it by meeting him personally… Being the perceived head and symbol of PB, Kelvin would rather hide in the cloak of obscurity of the internet and start to spread lies or half-baked truths to those who know nothing about the issue to make it appear that he is the aggrieved party.

Nevertheless, let me restate my pledge of Php 5,000 to Pinoybadminton to clear this issue once and for all… Send me a statement and I will gladly write a check for Pinoybadminton… just issue me an official receipt. (Does PB have an official receipt?)

2. “Nung Inquirer Badminton Expo lang yan nagbigay ng pera eh”

Money, again, money…

I am thankful that he acknowledges that fact… one may ask Inquirer how much a booth was in Megamall during that time… Definitely, it’s a lot more than Php 5,000. One can do a search what our objectives were considering that PB was not in the business of selling any merchandise.

But then again, I did not give it to him but rather, I gave it to Pinoybadminton. The only time I would give money to him is when there would be excess funds during our Monday Ebs in Centro. In truth, we stopped giving the excess to him when it became unclear where the money was going. All these years he never gave an accounting of what was needed to run the site despite his claim that he did so in the deleted “Donations” thread and the deleted “PB Panel”. Incidentally, we were able to back-up those threads for proof and evidence.

Kelvin might have forgotten some of the PB projects and events where I made some kind of contribution in the name of Pinoybadminton. Let me state some for the record:

a. Sponsoring of meeting at the Valle Verde Club for the PB magazine (10 people)
b. Badminton for Street children 1 (30 rackets)
c. Badminton for Street children 2 (New pairs of socks, new shuttlecocks, new clothing and used rackets and racket bags)
d. Booth for the Daily Inquirer Badminton Expo in Megamall
e. Sponsorship of Veteran Badong Banquilles to the 2004 US Open where he won 1st Runner-up (just ask how much plane fare is to Los Angeles)
f. Representation expenses during the visit of UK Doubles Coach Gerry McGuire (hotel pickup, Metro Manila court tour, dinner with Kelvin, meeting with Philippine coach Martin Araneta, exhibition game, midnight snack).
g. Expense for deficiency incurred during the 2005 Panel meeting held in the function room of Valle Verde Country Club
h. Contributions made for the operation of UE badminton scholar Jane de Jesus (you may ask her personally how much was given already)

All these were done in good faith and to the knowledge of the admin. I made sure that it was clear that those contributions were made by Pinoybadminton. In all representations, I would state that PB was started by Kelvin Montalbo and would introduce him as the founder of PB to people we were dealing with in the badminton community.

The above does not include incidental contributions as a result of our membership in different clubs and courts (Valle Verde, Tagaytay Highlands, Centro, West Drive, Smashroom, Sheridan). More often than not, Lorna and I would think of getting memberships in clubs and courts so PB could benefit. The owner of a court where a weekly EB is being held was saying that the only reason why they were giving PB rates of Php75/person for play all you can was because of us.

There may be many more which I could not recall as these were given whole-heartedly in the name of PB because we believed in its perceived goals and objectives.

3. “Sa Incorporation, sa first year lang nila ako isasali tapos oust nila ako, he’s out to grab power” “they want power.. sympre pagboard na, kick out nila ako. Ganun lang naman yun. Kaya I need people to hirit na ano ba? Para? Hidden agenda etc.. kakapikon na e! sobra!”

Let me make it clear that Incorporation was already in the original plan as early as the first half of 2004. It was suggested that since the forum would turn out into a group, negotiating for discounts and the idea of economies of scale would be better serviced if we had a legal entity.

When there was trouble brewing due to Kelvin’s possession and redirection of the smashphilippines.com domain name to pinoybadminton.com, I sensed that Smash might retaliate to Kelvin by reserving the name in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Though the issue was between Kelvin and Smash Philippines Foundation, Inc., the reservation of the name Pinoybadminton Inc. was made by me with Kelvin’s knowledge for the purpose of protecting the emerging Pinoybadminton group in it’s plan to be recognized as a legal entity.

It’s been close to 2 years that I have been spending for the reservation of the name and renewing it every month.

The talk of incorporating lasted without any results maybe due to the inability of the admin to take time to write some Purposes which was needed in the Express Form (fill in the blanks) obtainable from the SEC.

It was the early part of 2005, Michelle (aka cutecoosh) called me and asked for advise as to how PB could be strengthened and how money could be raised to defray the cost of the site (which was never mentioned). I told her that the most logical way was to pursue the original intent to incorporate so there would be transparency, professionalism and a clear formulation of direction. This would eventually lead to a synergetic approach to stability and recognition for what we stood for.

A meeting was held a week after that phone call and Kelvin revealed that he told Dez to work on it previously but she had not submitted anything to him (pls refer to PM of Dez in the second post of this blog “Regarding PB, PM sent…”). Since Erwin Gavino (aka rocket) was also requested to attend in his capacity as a corporate lawyer, he was tasked to coordinate with the group to work for the incorporation of Pinoybadminton. Erwin warned the panel that the SEC reservation was not enough as trademarks had to be filed in the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to protect not only the logo but also the name Pinoybadminton. This was an oversight on my part as I was not a lawyer but nevertheless, Kelvin was already warned on it.

The PB name was vulnerable having been in existence for more than a year without any legal document to support it. The fact that we have been hearing some negative feedback already from some sectors of the badminton community might give ideas to detractors to attack us through legal ways by questioning PB’s identity.

The series of events clearly indicated that Kelvin wanted to incorporate. The only stumbling block we could see was how to fill in the Purpose in the blank form. Erwin wanted the Panel (through email) to comment as to the statement of the Purpose as their contribution to this effort. He expected at least Kelvin to respond as he would be the most affected since PB was his baby. I had to make the excuse that Kelvin might not be good in words and for us just to take the initiative to fill in the blanks… until … a fateful incident happened … a complete lost of trust towards the admin.

It was bad enough to taint PB’s reputation externally as we were confident that the stigma could be erased once there is an image of professionalism through incorporation but it is worse if the admin would do something against someone within the ranks. Here we were trying to solidify the group and there he was printing a PM and showing it to others with his crooked interpretation (the printed PM is with us for evidence). It was a clear case of betrayal of trust. Damage was done, but we were willing to move on with him.

There were many things which were discovered as a result of the actions of the admin (refer to the post “The Admins’ Violations….) and we wanted to call a meeting to resolve the issues since they have transpired already. The deleted PB Panel thread was evidence that Kelvin at the very last minute wanted to cancel the meeting despite the attendance of almost all of those in the Panel.

It was during the said meeting that I found out that the Pinoybadminton trademark was filed by a group of concerned members as a leverage to correct the actions of Kelvin. This made the problem more complicated as there would be other parties to talk to.

Unfortunately, because of the many concerns, it was Kelvin’s choice that the issue of Incorporating was not taken up though personally I found it a viable solution to the problems being discussed by the group. It would create a new image for PB, it would absorb and offer solutions to the actions blamed on Kelvin, it would rationalize the existence of the group for eventual sponsorships and contribution from other sectors.

Though Bonito’s group was offering me the trademark for my disposal, I refused for the simple reason that I wanted to unify the groups which held interests in Pinoybadminton… Kelvin had the domain name, Bonito’s group the trademark while I held the reservation in the SEC. It was this challenge that I wanted to hurdle because by doing so would show that PB could rise above personalities.
I had a couple of meetings with Kelvin bringing along Dotty Alindogan (aka dots) to witness what was being talked about. I made sure that she was there so I would not be accused of making up a story.

In short, Kelvin agreed to incorporate and to meet up with Bonito’s group to clarify and patch up things.

On June 11, 2005, 4:57pm, Text from Kelvin Montalbo:
“ok… how many shall I appoint? Ill have the list by Sunday. Final na… lets do it then.”

We had our final meeting on June 24, 2005 at the Alex III Restaurant along Wilson Street after previous last minute cancellations by Kelvin.

In order to expedite everything, I gave him the draft Articles of Incorporation duly filled-up except for the names of the Incorporators.

I told him that the most ideal board composition would be composed of people who held vital interests in Pinoybadminton or at the very least if he was uncomfortable with the situation, he would have a sure slot in the board and the rest of the slots would be elected by the members as mandated in the By-Laws.

I thought everything was ok already until the very next thing I heard him do was to ban Bonito from the forum which I considered was a very bad move on his end. The group of Bonito had all the legal rights to use the name and logo under the laws of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). They can stop anyone including Kelvin from using the Pinoybadminton name and logo in part or in whole. Banning him would destroy whatever goodwill was left to solve the identity crisis of PB.

I could not understand this move of his since it was agreed that we will meet with Bonito’s group to settle things amicably. If there would be something which would come out of this, it would be violent reactions from Bonito and company which would be the last thing we would be needing at that point. I texted all moderators and asked who could be responsible and most said they were not in the position to ban a member as they pointed out to either Dez or Kelvin. I called Dez only to find out that she was in another country and she mentioned that she did not have the power to ban anyone. I called and texted Kelvin in all his known numbers but unfortunately, he would not take my calls.

I have not heard Kelvin discuss these things until my wife Lorna (aka purple) brought the issue up again in the
PB Panel:

This last post brought out the very character the admin was trying to hide from most of the members. Lorna (aka purple) was eventually banned for reasons we do not know, Chewy Chua who was respected in the badminton community and quoted in badminton magazines for his reviews was also banned, the sweet and innocent-looking Ela whose only fault was to defend Chewy was banned and finally this writer whose only fault was to bring out the truth, put purpose and direction and strengthen the group was also unceremoniously banned.

There were a lot who sympathized with us but that would be another story…

Power grabber? If there is anyone who is conscious about power then it is the admin himself. Proclaiming himself with the blaspemous phrase “I am God” is already enough proof that he wants to put himself up the pedestal.

I stand by my integrity, character and the name I try to protect and more than power grabbing, my role in politics, business and the arts had always been to mediate, to support and to build. I have supported government officials in their political agenda by putting up urban development projects, peripheral roads, experimental farms, a community hospital and drugstore, electric power plants and substations. Our consortium has built the biggest power plants in the country today. I have helped prominent business families in times of their need… even lost millions for the sake of friendship and relationships. I have financially supported the development of classical music by producing some of the grandest operas in the country… yet I prefer to remain low-key… we were brought up that way… we do things passionately because we believe in the purpose and that we should help make things succeed without asking anything in return.

Why is Kelvin scared that he would be ousted after one year? Why will he feel that way if he was doing a good job and would have the support of the members? Why is he putting that threat upon himself and telling people that I have a hidden agenda? Could it be that he is hiding something?

Banning Members from Posting

A Global Moderator when confronted that Kelvin had violated his own rules answered me in a text message...

"yan ang di ko masasagot even ako di ko binabasa rules unless im guilty of something then maybe ill chk if i violate anything or something..."

How then can you expect rules to be followed when those we expect to implement the rules do not know what they are or would only select phrases for their own convenience and disregard the entire intention of the rules?

I quote from PB Board Rules:

Club Act No. 002
Continuous abuse of our forum will result in being banned.
Stage of penalties:
Warning – 1st offense: Poster had violated a rule or guideline
Reprimanded/Suspended – 2nd offense: Poster continuously violated a rule or guideline
Banned – 3rd offense: Poster disregarded warnings made by admins / mods & officers.
Please note that the above stages are subject to the procedures of "WARNING THE USER" stated below.

Club Act No. 003
If you feel you have not violated any of the above rules and guideline and wish to talk to any of the admins / mods & officers. Present yourself in any of the EB (eye ball) and air your side and let the presiding officer decide what’s the next course of action to take.
We have tried several times to arrange a meeting between Kelvin and member Bonito not only to air Bonito's side but more importantly, to clarify issues with the objective of patching things up. Sadly, Kelvin would refuse and would not even want to talk about it. When Bonito was banned in the middle of 2005, I was calling up and texting Kelvin but he would refuse to take my calls nor answer my text messages.

WARNING THE USER

GR001. On the first offense, concerned poster will be duly advised thru Private Message (PM) regarding the violations he committed in regards to these rules.

GR002. Second offense, concerned poster will be given a +10% on his/her warning meter. Will enforce moderator preview of all new posts for 5 days.

GR003. Third offense, concerned poster will be given a +20% on his/her warning meter and so on. Will disable this members posting ability for 5 days.GR004. 100% on the warning meter will result to a 15 day suspension of account.

Were the above rules being followed by the very person who made them? Rules are made so there would be order. Unfortunately, if the very person who made the rules chooses to ignore them, then there would be no order.

I was banned from posting because I questioned things a normal thinking person would ask... or so I thought because I neither received a PM nor was there anyone who informed me of my status until I found out. No explanation was given to me as to the reason for my being banned.

The right to be informed of my status had time and again been violated. In fact, when a VIP status was created, I heard that the criteria was "just to do what dlreyes is doing". Modesty aside, I would think that I have done more than enough of what is expected of a member in terms of work and dedication to the group. For each contribution whether in cash or kind, it would always be from Pinoybadminton and not from me. Now thinking about it, I never asked for a VIP status so I would not mind being stripped of the title but then again, I would have hoped that Kelvin would have been man enough to at least inform me about it as I would always present myself as representing PB (with Kelvin's knowledge) to merchants and movers in the industry.

Forum Rights
The Forum Administrator / Moderators has the right to the following:
1. Delete any posts, pictures, avatars or signature made by the user
2. Banned, suspend or delete any user
3. Lock or Move threads or topics
It is so often that Kelvin would invoke these "Forum Rights of the Forum Administrator/Moderators" which obviously he just added because of the way it was written (his style is very consistent, check bold words, wrong grammar etc. Please note that I have nothing against people with wrong grammar... the intent is just to show that it was Kelvin himself who added the above because of how it was written). What he fails to understand is that prior to the added "Forum Rights", there is an existing procedure in Warning the User before the actual Banning could be done.

Just recently, he moved entire threads to Limbo (a place we do not know) to cover his tracks and suppress the truth. Among these are the whole PB Panel Group Thread which covered discussions, suggestions, minutes of meetings and other sensitive issues in which participation was limited to PB members with titles. Other threads moved to Limbo when members started asking logical questions were "Donations", "Shutting Down PB" , "5,000 members", "PB member titles" among others.

Many have been witnesses that because of the above "Forum Rights" the admin would always say the blasphemous phrase "I am GOD..." quite a number of times. It's quite ironic that the Real God answers prayers in strange ways, false gods never bother at all.

Sad to say that Kelvin did not only violate his own FORUM rules but he has violated the BASIC RIGHT of a human being to express himself within the bounds of modern civility.

The Admin’s Violations against the Institution

Unfortunately, the admin himself, Kelvin, has and is tarnishing the image of Pinoybadminton in the badminton community.

His language and behavior has brought dishonor to the group, which many have been trying to uplift.

Does anyone remember how he got another forum's domain name (then the leading forum in Philippine badminton), tried to sell it for an outrageous Php 50,000 and to add insult to injury, purposely redirected the domain name to Pinoybadminton.com?

How many times has he cancelled regular Ebs without prior knowledge of the court owners who have purposely shunned other players due to PB’s exclusive use? Did he even have the decency of apologizing to them?

How many times has he printed Private Messages (PM) and has shown it to people for the purpose of mockery?

How many times has he used another forumer's handle to make it appear that the post did not come from him?

Would anyone remember why his heckling during a tournament resulted into his being beaten up forcing the cancellation of the match and the disqualification of the players? That stigma still creates ripples and has forever tarnished the PB name.

Has he been accountable to merchandise being ordered through him?

Has he been truthful as to the costs being charged?

What really caused the rift between Bonito and Kelvin during the 1st Anniversary of PB in Yonex Court? Did he have the right to shut-off the court lights without the knowledge of the court owners despite the fact that the players had permission from the court owners to play during that time?

Why is he scared to attend meetings called for to clarify things?

What is his reputation among people involved in Philippine badminton?

What really is his motive in creating Pinoybadminton as he just copied the goals and objectives as well as my perceived mission for the group in an interview I had? Why can’t he state it if ever it was changed so he could stand by it for everyone to see?

Knowing the answers to these questions, is this the Pinoybadminton that we want?

Knowing what is wrong and what is right, where will one go?

These are questions wanting to be answered.

Pinoybadminton's Contribution to Philippine Badminton

Looking back, Pinoybadminton, through some individuals, embarked on projects which it thought would be its contribution to Philippine Badminton's development among which were the Badminton for Street Children 1, Badminton for Street Children 2 (both with Baddicts), Participation in the First Inquirer Badminton Expo (Megamall), Sponsorship of Badong Banquiles in the US Open (1st Runner-up veteran's division), Mediation for parties with conflicting badminton issues, Meeting and exchange of ideas between National Coach Martin Araneta and British Doubles Coach Gerry McGuire, Contribution to the Rehabilitaiton of UE scholar Jane de Jesus, Dissemination of information for the accreditation in the Philippine Badminton Association, Providing discounts for Badminton merchandise and equipment, Discussions on the state of Philippine badminton, merchandise, court facilities etc., Providing first hand and credible reviews of Badminton Equipment and even this forum had in one way or another made its contribution.

The site became a springboard for a potential magazine which was discussed but never took off... even the possibility of PB's own court was wanting to be realized...

For these to be accomplished with a greater impact, the need for a cohesive vision must be realized through proper organization applying standard ethical practices.

By now we should have known our strengths and weaknesses... we should have already learned how to use the strength within us and use other's strength to make-up for our weaknesses. Strength lies in numbers ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTING towards a common objective with a Vision in mind.

As with others who have shared this sentiment with the old members, we can say that we have done our part and would want to continue to do so...

Problem is, does Kelvin want the help of these individuals who have made a difference in PB?

Questions were being asked... Sadly, they were never answered.

(So many revelations in this message... it shows who was suppose to do what, why things were being done and how they were suppose to have been done. Who's taking action? Who's procastinating? Why?)

dlreyes: Dez, apparantly you would not know what Kelvin and I talked about in 3 meetings after our Valle Verde Meeting. To make sure that there was a witness, i brought Dots along in all those meetings (You can ask her what transpired and ask what agreements were supposed to have been accomplished.)

Organizing PB was part of the mission vision and that was the reason why I kept on reserving Pinoybadminton Inc. for more than year and a half already with Kelvin's knowledge and blessings (I spend for this and this could be verified in the SEC. Did you know that he told me that you were suppose to make the Articles of Incorporation? and that I told him that you seem to be very busy as we have many lawyers who could take care of it instead?).

I am fighting for compromises (do you remember when we arranged a compromise with West Drive when you had a problem with them?) and identity as the group of Bonito holds the registration of the name "Pinoybadminton" in the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and legally they would have the right to use the name in anything they wish including the cessation of this forum.

I know that he can work with kelvin and I have in fact relayed this to Kelvin, Michelle (Koosh) and Jun.

I suggest you talk to Kelvin personally as the people he talks to relay the info to me. I have not made any moves to calm down emotions of before and in fact I am not here to "grab power" as what Kelvin has been texting to others (they forward text to me).

I have even told Kelvin of his strengths and weaknesses and the only way we could move forward is to combine our strengths. If you have access to my PMs then you may check how many times I have defended Kelvin and PB from the start but I have been hearing too much already lately from reputable people in the industry (merchants, suppliers, courts, tournament organizers and even the media).

If we continue to plan activities in the name of PB then we are working as a group and a certain reputation and standard has to be kept. If it is just pure talk then let PB remain as a forum which I can say was not the original intent as I understood it (I was a member a day after PB started).

Don't misunderstand me Dez but I love this forum as much as you do but anytime it could die because of legalities and all because of a breakdown of communication between Bonito and Kelvin. I can control Bonito because he believes in me but kelvin has to do his part.

Dez, ask around... ask Chewy, Mr. Wilson, Ron and the other "heads"... you ask me not to do anything but I get accused of not doing anything for the sake of the group... I can disclose more but I prefer a personal touch in everything we do.

I believe that my biggest fault at this time is just sticking to what Kelvin has stated in the past and honoring commitments. I did not ask to be the first featured member, I did not ask to be member of the year and more so, I did not ask that I be classified as a VIP member. I am not asking anything in return but pride of becoming a member of a group which could make a difference as originally envisioned.

Dez: Actually, I know that I was supposed to make some info about the articles of incorporation, but not actually make it, as I am not a lawyer. I was supposed to compile some info for Erwin, but then I got caught up in work, and when Erwin followed it up with me via email, I went to Kelvin to get the info, which I didn't get.

Anyway, I want you to know that I sent you PM only to have the controversy over the forum stopped. Apparently, your discussions with Kelvin are not yet finalized. I would suggest that you try to finalize things with him on a personal level first (i.e. outside of the public forum) and not start on the public forum.

As for the other judgements you think I may have made on you on your group, let me clarify now that I am not taking sides, as both pro-organization and con-organization has their points. Frankly, it doesn't matter to me which way PB goes. I will eternally be here to help out, and that's all. If we stay as a forum, that's fine. If we incorporate, that's fine too. I can see pros and cons on both ends as well.

I'm just tired of reading about this incorporating thing over the public thread. The whole matter is tiring to me already. I would rather not be involved in it at all until a final course of action has been decided.

I am simply pleading you leave this topic out of the public forum. If others voice it out, then let them. Let's not instigate people to get more ideas about what has transpired, what is transpiring, and what will transpire about PB's future.

Again, it all comes down to PB's mission and vision. Apparently, Kelvin has changed it from what you know, and he hasn't made the move to make an official mission-vision. I would assume this to mean he's not quite ready to commit to either.

As for the topic of Bonito and his group, what they have done is despicable, but my resentment of him stems from his insinuations about my integrity about the money involved in past PB events. I have not made a single cent from any PB event I have been involved in, and have not asked for a single cent. If any, PB owes me close to 40K total. Other than that, it's in his own conscience about what he did with regard to PB.

It's up to you how you will take this PM. Personally, I have no personal vendettas against anyone in particular (except Bonito) which is why I made the call to try to organize something for the PB anniversary, since Kelvin is not taking action on it.

In the same manner, if you find that Kelvin is too slow or is not doing his part as PB admin, then as I suggested earlier, please do go and take the initiative to incorporate! Unfortunately, since PB does not belong to you or me, or to anyone except kelvin, we are unable to use the PB name.

And, if a new group comes about, it will not "kill" PB's identity anyway. Look at SmashPH, baddicts, etc. Also, a lot of PB members are also members of other badminton groups. I don't think any harm will come to PB if a new group is made which can incorporate the ideals you remember from Kelvin's mission-vision.

Trying to influence Kelvin about this might probably be a lost cause already...

(This is to show that the original PB mission vision which was stated by the writer during an interview was the basis of Kelvin's goals and objectives for the group. Though the PM was sent Jan 22, 2004, the actual interview with the writer was made in late 2003).

dlreyes: As a forum, Pinoybadminton would be the leading information source for Philippine badminton. Facts and opinions would be highly regarded because participants in the forum would not only be the players themselves but movers who would want Philippine badminton to prosper.As a club, Pinoybadminton would go a step or two further than the usual interest in playing badminton... Pinoybadminton Club would immerse itself in the development of Philippine badminton. It would seek and be seeked by different components involved in the sport, from private commercial establishments to influential clubs to public policy making government entities.These answers are projections on where we would be 5 years from now and yet, this early, the forum has started to attract people who have credibility as their biggest asset, contributing their time and effort in a synergetic exchange of information. As early as the first day of this new year, Pinoybadminton embarked in an outreach program which had stimulated the dreams of those children whose only fault is being less fortunate in life.All these being accomplished out of spontaneous willingness of its members... perhaps if planned, then the forecast and projection would be accomplished in a much shorter time.

kelvin: just like to ask permission from you if i could use some in our vision mission statement?
